Franconia Notch

So how did the Pemi section go? Any highs, lows? You had the knee figured out for a little bit.

Did it flare back up before you hit Franconia Notch? No,

it was good.

Right after Zeeland, we made it up to South Twin.

because of a need.

About 21 years ago, it became apparent that we didn't have anything in the Franconia Notch that would deal with either searchers or many of the rescues.

And what would happen is Fish and Game would need help, and then they would call out the fire departments.

And the fire departments were ill-prepared for, you know, going out on a hike for five or six hours.

They weren't necessarily prepared.

They'd show up in bunker gear or just had no idea of what was going to be expected of them.

And so it became apparent that maybe in the Franconia Notch area that we needed to have a search and rescue team.

The nearest search and rescue team was the Ammonusic Valley team.

They watched it pass behind the summit of Cannon Mountain, 4,077 feet up, maybe a mile off, then came out the other side.

They stopped again in Franconia Notch beneath the Old Man of the Mountain.

At the parking lot for the flume, the trees cut off their view, so they drove on past the Indian Head Resort, where Betty noticed a man smoking behind a screen door, and a little more than two miles north of North Woodstock, the thing came down over the road in front of them.

It was big by then, and silent.

Two feature films are in development, a Netflix project from the Obama's Higher Ground Company announced in December 2022 under the title White Mountains, and Strange Arrivals, announced in May 2025 by Seesaw Films, the producers of Slow Horses, with Demi Moore and Betty Coleman Domingo as Barney, directed by Roger Ross Williams from a Jane Anderson screenplay based on Toby Ball's podcast of the same name.

Williams has scouted Franconia Notch.

Neither had a release date as of mid-September 2026.

And he said you don't need to

visit Franconia Notch.

There are other notches in New Hampshire as well that are great.

I think Evans Notch, Route 113 that straddles the border of Maine and New Hampshire, is a beautiful drive that sees a lot less traffic.

Yeah, so where are we headed to today?

Today we're going up to Franconia Notch to bike on the Franconia Notch Recreation Path.

Nice.

I know this is something you've really wanted to check out for a while.

And the first time I did it, I was very curious about it.

So I'm very excited to do it.

The Franconia Notch Recreation Path is a paved path.

It's 100% paved, actually, all the way through the whole entire Franconia Notch State Park.
