Well, that's, first of all, having just released a Patreon extra which we released into the flagship feed while we were on our break on Joshua Muchin's Fourth Wall Phantoms, which I've been reading, and I think it's a masterpiece of weird nonfiction, and I'm hoping that we do an episode on it this year.

Very cool.

But the concept of breaking the fourth wall is, as he argues pretty definitively, a fundamental aspect of paranormal phenomena, and it's a fundamental thing that happens in, you know, various kinds of fictions.

Breaking the fourth wall is a durable, durable trope across multiple traditions of storytelling.

And it goes way back.

It's not a postmodern-

It's been happening since the beginning.

so today we are talking about breaking the fourth wall which is a kind of a hard topic to adjust to a podcast opening bit not really a narrative format

Yeah, I mean, let me introduce what the fourth wall is.

I do find the origin of the term to be very interesting and revealing.

So it comes from plays, which a lot of things do because that's the oldest form of professional storytelling.

I mean, in the West, it's in ancient Greece, but not ancient Egypt.

We need to build the fourth wall back in reality TV.

Hulu has leaned fully on the fourth wall.

It's not existent on Hulu for some reason.

In 2010, the Producers Guild of America sanctioned a transmedia producer credit for film, television, and interactive projects.

Since then, dozens of transmedia production companies have emerged worldwide, such as Miranda Studio, Starlight Runner Entertainment, and Fourth Wall.

while new careers in creative strategy, content producers, intermediary agencies, and digital marketing all reflect the necessity to adapt to a transmedia future, end quote.

Yeah, so Freeman goes on to give a few more examples, right? He says that in Canada, that funding for films and TV programs is restricted unless you have a website, which is very funny.

I have heard definitely persnickety stuff.

More recently, a creator I like named Linkara, who does a lot of comic analysis, does a Top the Fourth Wall, which is great stuff, said someone basically shared some of his stuff that is critical of Youngblood.

And for the love of God, If you wrote Youngblood and don't realize that you were a young person learning to be a comic artist that got so insanely lucky to hit at the right time and not get smacked down for so insanely bold to act at the right time.

I'm not going to say that's luck.
