This episode, we head back to Africa, but this time on the eastern side, as we visit the late Jurassic Tendaguru Formation in southeast Tanzania.

What do you know about fake fossils? Have you ever found yourself being faked?

No, I j- well, I have had a little bit of, um, experience with it.

I mean, I, I would say enhanced rather than faked.

Oh, uh-oh.

That's what we're gonna have a look at today.

What lessons can we learn in this bonus episode about fake fossils and how fake fossils can fuck things up? Excuse my French.

[upbeat music] So Suzie, for this bonus episode for our special Patreon members, I wanted to talk about fake fossils.

Yeah, known also from several specimens.

Yeah, so it, very important, all four have been coined Fossil of the Year-

I used to teach exactly the same thing.

And it is, it's quite, and I used to get, I had an exercise where, you know, you can go on the, uh ipcc is it the ipcc the internet intergovernmental panel on climate changes websites and you can uh on their website and you can model uh you can look at their models for how um the earth is going to warm and how local areas are going to change as a result of various different emission scenarios with different climate models and you can actually go on the website and play around with it and i used to do a practical where i used to get them to do this and they could see like you know what would happen to southern england or what would happen to you know europe or different places it's a super cool website you can model it but yeah i mean they come away absolutely i mean it's terrifying when you look at the stuff it is completely terrifying that is a

side note sorry side note the world's dying let's move on let's start talking about fossils again so that was the end of their paper basically they got the two main pulses um i mean i'm a bit frustrated that doesn't contain any fossil data because of course we're only looking at one side of the picture there there's a lot of things in the cretaceous that um angiosperms that aren't counterfeit here and i guess cretaceous pollen might be a bit more tricky to work with but i think if we're going to tell this story we definitely need that as part of the story it's a bit

surprising it's a bit surprising that they didn't um look at the fossil record i mean maybe they did and say oh yeah these pulses correspond with the evolution of you know, X or Y or something like that.
