The best evidence is in the etymologies, where Tolkien has a form, taurana faras, and glosses faras as hunting, from a root meaning hunt or pursue.

So, El Domo glosses the name as Forest of the Hunting.

Now, an earlier gloss, Hills of the Hunters, comes from the Lays of Balerion, but El Domo says that isn't a proper translation.

The Silmarillion's Index calls it High Farath.
