Ford Duratec engine

The Caterham philosophy is about power-to-weight ratio, and the 420R is a wonderful example.

The real world 420R race car uses a two-liter naturally aspirated Ford Duratec engine and a six-speed, six-speed sequential gearbox.

It weighs about 635 kilograms, including the driver.

Think about that for a second.

This isn't simply a Seven with some stickers and a roll cage, the 420R is a dedicated race machine.

It's not road legal.

You've got the Ford Duratec engine, the sequential gearbox, race suspension, race brakes, slick tires, wet tires, a roll cage, and a fire extinguisher, all wrapped up around that tiny, lightweight Seven chassis.

And in the real world, this thing races properly.

So you got the color inserts, and then you could only get it in a manual if it was a real ST trim.

And then it had the 2.3 liter Duratec.

Ooh.

So instead of the 137 horsepower 2 liter, you got the 148 horsepower 2.3 liter Duratec.

Which one did you have?

I had the later, well, same platform.

I think that's about when Ford first bought into them.

At the back, Jaguar took the control blade multi-link out of the Mondeo estate because the saloon's strut towers left nowhere to put a rear differential and half shafts.

The engine was a Ford Duratec block with almost nothing of Fords left above it.

Jaguar cast its own twin cam heads, four valves a cylinder, variable inlet timing, a variable-length inlet tract, direct-acting bucket tappets in place of Ford's finger followers, and fracture-split forged powder-metal connecting rods.

The new upgraded 2.5-liter engine made 194 horsepower.
