For the Strength of Youth

We can bring that same curiosity to Scripture too.

The FSY Guide says, study his life and teachings.

So let's bring a question about Jesus Christ.

How does Jesus respond when people need him? I want to take a look really quick in 3 Nephi 17, because this is the Savior talking, visiting with everyone around the temple.

It's something that you read two years prior and didn't feel anything.

Just trust that that's going to come.

The FSY

Guide says this, learning to be aware of the Spirit, it takes time, practice, and patience.

And spoiler alert, she wasn't often given a formal title or calling, but felt prompted by the Lord to lead.

Laura is a professional speaker who has spoken to both youth and women's audiences, including EFY, FSY, and church education programs.

While her husband was a student at Harvard Business School, she founded an organization to support families called Crimson Parents.

She is a comedian and finds joy and humor in life and especially in her role as a wife and mother to her five children.

So I have had callings in the church

and I've had, I'm a speaker for the church.

So I work for BYU and do EFY and FSY and I worked for church education, but so much of my speaking has actually been coordinated by heaven.

So I love callings because they appoint us a role.

That's a life of integrity.

I hope this week as you study the For the Strength of Youth, you come to better understand truth, knowledge of things as they are, as they were, and as they will be.

And I testify that as you come to know that truth, it will actually set you and I free.

It allows us more choice.

So now I get to have my friend Susan, my daughter Meg made this Book of Mormon cover And because I'm in the young women right now, look how fun this is.

Let me tell you the reason for the cover is because I glued my FSY guide to the back of my Book of Mormon.

See, it's glued.

So now I also get to have my whole FSY guide in here while I'm reading.

But the FSY guide is a little bit longer than my Book of Mormon.

So can you see I had to put, what are these things that you hang up on your wall? You can hang a picture frame with them.

Someone knows the word.

In paragraph 14, he continues, he has done everything necessary for you, for us, to have joy in this life and forever.

When you're learning something difficult, you can involve Heavenly Father.

The FSY Guide gives us this beautiful invitation.

Involve the Lord in your efforts and He will guide you.

Tell them where you're stuck.

Here's what's beautiful.

You can involve Heavenly Father in the things that you're learning about and the work that you do every single day.

The FSY Guide asks us to live with integrity.

It says, be the same faithful follower of Jesus Christ in public and in private.

Remember, because of Jesus Christ, no mortal imperfection gets the final word.

I love the way that For Strength of Youth also teaches this.

It teaches young people, you young people, that your bodies are gifts from Heavenly Father while also acknowledging the truth that we pointed out, that our bodies aren't perfect right now and that they won't be until the resurrection.

And that's worth kind of saying out loud and hearing ourselves even say it.

"And it did work for them according to their faith in God.

Therefore if they had faith to believe that God could cause that those spindles should point the way they should go, behold, it was done; therefore they had this miracle, and also many other miracles wrought by the power of God day by day." It will take faith to trust that what our prophets are teaching us, that what the For Strength of Youth guide is teaching us, is what is going to get us through the wilderness safely.

It will take faith to trust in this law of chastity because it is not the way the world sees things.

And so it's gonna take faith to go against the world.

I can take what the Lord has taught about honesty and apply it to numerous, uh, situations or, or a decision that's in front of me.

A great example of this dynamic is the new For the Strength of Youth pamphlet.

It's a little bit different from the one that I knew when I was a teenager.

The guide teaches truths about Jesus, our identity, our divine potential, and then invites us to use those truths or principles to make informed choices.

Some optional lesson ideas.

A teacher insight.

A, a another possible activity that you could do that helps to illustrate this principle is to make a comparison between the older For the Strength of Youth pamphlet and the current version of it.

Allow them to compare and contrast the way in which a particular topic was treated in the older version opposed to the new.

Okay.

Well, I just, I do think that it's interesting that as, you know, for example, For the Strength of Youth has pulled away of a list of to-dos and don'ts, right? Like, tattoos-

Mm-hmm

... used to be associated with modesty, right?

Yep.

I do.
