For All the Saints

The story the early Christians told was not about humans or their souls could, as it were, go upstairs into the presence of God.

It was about how God had come downstairs to live with them and would one day complete that operation, suffusing all creation with his glorious presence." Uh, when I, uh, was first starting on the journey which led to this book, I wrote a little book, oh, 20-some years ago, um, called, uh, For All the Saints, uh, uh, quite a small treatment about how actually we all get the order of travel wrong.

And Ruth Gledhill, the then Times religious affairs correspondent, picked it up and wrote a nice little news piece about my little book, and believe me, publishers are delighted when the book makes it not just onto the review pages but onto the news pages.

Unfortunately, some headline writer got hold of it, and the headline read, "New bishop abolishes heaven and the soul." [laughs]

And this is one of my favourites.

For all the saints.

We're praising God for the saints and the saints in this context and in scripture are Christians, Christ followers.

And we're going to praise God for those who have gone before us.
