Foot Locker Cross Country Championships

I grew up competing with, against his wife, too.

She did Foot Locker as well.

Really?

So, uh, yeah.

I don't think it's that common in distance running, especially nowadays, but it was, yeah, it was very common with us that we had pretty long rests.

I wanna go back in time, uh, before all the madness we're talking about and, and all the crazy workouts that, that you would do.

Um, you won Foot Locker.

I just wanna name some stuff off for people who aren't aware.

Probably not.

You probably just had Footlocker.

It was probably Kinney Nationals back in that-

Yeah, that's correct.

[laughs]

Uh, Kinney, but then NXN.

So now it's NXN, and now it's Brooks Cross Country National Championships, but Brooks was, uh, Footlocker before that, Kinney before that.

Same course.

Uh, Ranford Stanford.

Uh, she's quite a bit older than you, but she won Foot Locker twice, and-

I think I might.

I, like I recognize the name.

I had a good, I had a w- great senior year.

Uh, the memories of, like, competing in Meet of Champs and in Footlocker at Penn and, you know, all over.

It was just, it was fantastic overall.

So was Footlocker your favorite? 'Cause everyone we've talked to have told us that Footlocker is, competing at Footlocker, especially if they did it as, like, a sophomore or a junior, their goal wasn't to win Mocs National, it was to get back to Footlocker, 'cause that experience was incredible.

Did you have that same experience at Footlocker?

Uh, Footlocker Regionals is alw- was always, like, the goal.

It was like I gotta make at then, then it was top eight.

Um, but I was like, "Gotta be top eight." And I had a pretty good sequence.

He'd already been accepted into school, and I don't know what the story was with his being recruited.

He was a, he was a, back then called Kinney, but he was a Kinney finalist in cross country.

Seems like he should've been recruited pretty hard, and it, it turns out that we didn't even pay his way up for his visit.

He got a, another, a, another buddy to drive him from Manhattan Beach, California, to Stanford, a guy named Matt Ryan, who has remained one of my friends to this day.

And, uh, and this is '80.

This is '80.

So there was this new thing called Kinney, which turned into Footlocker.

Uh-huh.
