Focusrite

We’ll be honest – Focusrite is a pretty great place to work. Incorporating both the Focusrite and Novation brands, we make music easy to make, from bedroom DJs to the greatest show on earth. Everyone who works here has an enormous passion for music: as it says on our website, sound is everything. We take that very seriously – though we have a lot of fun doing it. As the number one selling audio interface brand worldwide, Focusrite has an illustrious, prestigious, and, let’s face it, cool history. Alongside Novation, the hardware and software that we develop plays an instrumental (see what we did there?) role in shaping the sound of modern music. From amateur to pro, our goal is to help musicians to make their music the very best it can be. Music has always been an exciting thing to be involved with, and that’s not about to change. We embrace its evolution, and that means being open to new ideas. Our whole business is structured to let everyone contribute and be heard at all levels, and we make sure it’s a fun place to work. Company hack-days, external visits – we’re all about innovation, fresh thinking and great, great products. (Plus, you get a free lunch in the canteen. No really.) We work hard. We are professional. We select really, really talented people. And we absolutely love our work. So if you think you can bring something new to the mix, we’ll be looking forward to hearing from you.www.focusrite.com

I think that's one word, but it doesn't matter.
Brian WhittenHOST
41:50
Anyway, we're using Shure microphones and a Focusrite audio interface that routes all the sound directly into our computers.
Brian WhittenHOST
42:01
These are microphones that are... specifically made to filter out any noise from any distance.
Brian WhittenHOST
42:08
You have to write up on these things for you to hear anything.
David YasHOST
43:52
Or a
Matt CundillHOST
43:53
Focusrite would solve that.
David YasHOST
43:55
Yeah, that's right.
David YasHOST
43:57
So, yeah, you could do it.
MikeHOST
53:00
What are you recording through? Just Ableton.
MikeHOST
53:03
Just Ableton? Are you going through what are your preamps? Just the Focusrite.
MikeHOST
53:09
Just Focusrite? Just Focusrite
Logan WilliamsGUEST

preamps.
Logan WilliamsGUEST
53:11
But I'm doing a lot of mixing through like the the universal audio plug-in suite is awesome so they have like an ssl like um what do you call it like a like sort of a preamp little module thing and what i'll generally do is record pretty light through the actual preamp and the focus right so the signal's not Not even close to being hot.
Logan WilliamsGUEST
53:34
And then I'll drive it with this plugin to sort of saturate it and color it a little bit.
Logan WilliamsGUEST
53:39
And I find for vocals, that's really nice.
Logan WilliamsGUEST
53:41
Because, yeah, the saturation that you're going to get out of distorting a Focusrite plugin is not nice.
Steve MartinGUEST
5:35
If you're using a USB mic or something that just has one input, you don't really ever have to do that because you plug it in and there's only one input or it's just a microphone, so you just can start recording.
Steve MartinGUEST
5:46
But with something like this, you usually have to tell it, you know, I'm using a Focusrite Scarlett.
Steve MartinGUEST
5:50
So if I press I, it tells you that I'm using Input 1, but I can double press I.
speaker_2UNKNOWN
5:57
And then I can go down to Input and I can switch this to Input 2, 3,
RyanHOST
69:16
And have engineers and have the whole recording studio brought in.
RyanHOST
69:22
Nowadays, we could just go with this Focusrite.
RyanHOST
69:24
Well, it's like you could just...
ScottHOST
69:25
Everybody bring the gear they have and set up somewhere.
ScottHOST
71:04
Huge.
ScottHOST
71:05
Yeah, and like I said, now we
RyanHOST
71:07
can do it, though, because all we need is a laptop, which also is... a decent-ish laptop is $2,500, and a Focusrite, which is like $250 used, that's all you really need and a couple cables.
ScottHOST

One of the best recording experiences I ever had was working on Jenny Ann Manning's record, Carnies and Cowboys.
Detlef SchlichHOST

I'm sitting in a little house on Cape Clear Island, off the coast of West Cork, Ireland.
Detlef SchlichHOST

In front of me is my laptop connected to my Focusrite audio interface.
Detlef SchlichHOST

My microphone is balanced rather creatively on top of a large stainless steel coffee thermos.
Detlef SchlichHOST

Not exactly Abbey Road Studios, is it? But that's the beauty of it.
Garrett GonzalesHOST
0:53
I hope not because that means this thing is working, but I do have a new digital audio station.
Garrett GonzalesHOST

For those who actually understand podcasting, I used to run my audio through something called a Focusrite.
Garrett GonzalesHOST
1:08
Focusrite is kind of like the OG thing that even bands would use and such.
Garrett GonzalesHOST
1:13
And I decided to try something new.
Garrett GonzalesHOST
1:16
So we'll see.
Dara AbdurahmanGUEST
60:29
The drums were, I would hold the mic in front of Corey and record him playing the drums and I think by the time we did the bit in Yellow Door with Will, we'd used a couple of Will's mics to do the drums on that bit.
Dara AbdurahmanGUEST
60:44
But predominantly everything on the album is my SM58 going into my Focusrite 2i2, which is like disgusting.
Dara AbdurahmanGUEST
60:53
Like I feel bad sitting here in front of you.
Adam ShanahanHOST
60:56
But no, it's like, this is the thing, like I, there's not a thing I'd change about that.
Kevin C. OlohanHOST
6:11
I've had that recorder for eight years.
Kevin C. OlohanHOST
6:13
and now I have joined the 21st century on a new Focusrite on a device to go directly into my laptop and I have to be fair already even in the recording noticing a big difference in the record quality and I just have a little bit more wiggle room to play with a little bit more protection for recording and it's very interesting recording directly into the laptop and not into an outer source That might not be noticeable to you.
Kevin C. OlohanHOST
6:43
If anything, I hope it's noticeable as an improvement.
Kevin C. OlohanHOST
6:47
But that's just why I'm feeling a little bit giddy today, a little bit excited because I have a new toy.
Brad SundbergHOST
23:50
I think it's whim.
Brad SundbergHOST
23:52
I've got a whim streamer in the other room, and sometimes I hook it up to my Focusrite, and other times I don't.
Brad SundbergHOST
23:58
This time I didn't.
Brad SundbergHOST
23:58
I just listened to it straight into my Bryson amp, and it sounds so good.
