His gamer tag was Cyanide.
ZachHOST
80:30
He was part of the Fnatic team that won the first ever World Championships.
ZachHOST
80:34
He's still currently the youngest person to ever win the World Championships.
ZachHOST
80:38
So he sadly passed away.
Chad BurchillHOST
65:08
conversations more interesting, right? Like certain games being more important.
Chad BurchillHOST
65:12
Apparently tonight, there's a big one between Big and Fnatic.
Chad BurchillHOST
65:17
Yeah.
Chad BurchillHOST
65:18
where is it it was in the in where is it where is it dude

Chad BurchillHOST
109:22
That's the problem.
Chad BurchillHOST
109:22
I agree with your sentiment for sure.
Chad BurchillHOST
109:25
But why, I guess if I'm a young kid, it's like, well, why do I give a fuck what these old cunts did 10 years ago? VP, unless I'm Polish, you know, I probably don't give too much of a fuck about VP or unless I'm Swedish, don't really care too much about Fnatic back in 2005.
Chad BurchillHOST
109:38
But
Peter DunHOST
16:15
the European team, Soaz, French, very strong French accent, Diamond, Alicic, Edward, all Russian-speaking primary language, although I think Edward was fluent in English, I'm pretty sure at the time, and Yellow Peak from Germany, right? So, fan voted, couldn't understand each other, and TSM, TSM managed to, sorry, not TSM, NA managed to beat them And that's the only series they've won, and they were fourth out of the fifth regions, right? So this is how Cloud9 got their joy in here.
Peter DunHOST
16:43
And this is why, like, Fnatic and...
Peter DunHOST
16:46
This is why Fnatic actually even had to come through the group stage in the first place to play them, because they had to go and put a warm-up in groups, you know? So sure, Cloud9 won a game, but they won a game against a weaker opponent, and it's arguable that NA had literally zero reason to be there.
Peter DunHOST
17:00
Like, there's...
Peter DunHOST
17:01
NA didn't even get a team into the top four of Worlds the previous year.
ThorinHOST
20:17
Whereas, Connected...
ThorinHOST
20:19
I also think Weibo's is fraudulent because look who Weibo wins against.
ThorinHOST
20:23
They beat NRG, Mad Lions and Fnatic.
ThorinGUEST
2:00
Whereas that was already like this first sort of sign of like, oh, actually after the original roster that built all the success, it's just going to be another esports org.
ThorinGUEST
2:08
Much like, think about all the names that have age barrier, NIP, Fnatic, Virtus Pro.
ThorinGUEST
2:12
None of these teams have the roster of what they used to be.
ThorinGUEST
2:15
But I think the other thing that's also pressing about this specific move, because I saw this is quite rare in esports.

Harry RussellGUEST
41:07
He got both barrels from Astralis.
Harry RussellGUEST
41:10
Like... it's mad since since Bioware have closed down I've been thinking about the old Mass Effect games and you know like the little dialogue wheel that will come up like they're always picking that you know one of the options is always just batshit insane like you would never pick it like that's the option Astralis seem to pick every damn time it's like what if we do the craziest most harmful thing for everyone let's pick that one and so yeah like and this this is where it's left them dude this was the team that even now, like with Vitality's dominance and everything, people still, you know, talk about the Astralis era and how good it was.
Harry RussellGUEST
41:48
And that's why, you know, when people say how Fnatic fell apart, it's like, yeah, that's also a shame.
Harry RussellGUEST
41:55
But it was over kind of a longish period.
Josh WilkinsonHOST
67:19
Counter-Strike.
Josh WilkinsonHOST
67:19
I mean, the example that people would give, and I'll let you rebut it, is 2023 Fnatic.
Josh WilkinsonHOST
67:24
Yeah,
MiniPANELIST
67:25
but we had a system.
MiniPANELIST
71:10
Yeah.
MiniPANELIST
71:13
I think you just need to build it from a foundation, is basically the rule.
MiniPANELIST
71:18
Like, let's see a team that is consistently making tournaments, consistently making into, like, open bracket of, like, you know, global events, a la a Fnatic, and you add in some better players, you're probably going to do all right.
MiniPANELIST
71:31
But, like, if you're just building it from scratch, I think... expectations fuck it all and then it's so expensive like it's so ludicrous the expensive as soon as you as soon as there's a whiff of like oh this team's just building a super team it's like i don't imagine the orcs who sell their pledge knowing that just or the players themselves just know they can just charge whatever like salary they want to kind of thing you know
ThorinHOST
2:12
Because then you get, like, that real temperature check, don't you? You don't get the whole thing of the hype before and then afterwards when you already know the result you can tell.
ThorinHOST
2:18
so normally i would make this episode only about what's going on now except for you know fan questions but we're actually going to take the tone down a little second so what i wanted to do at the beginning of the episode so we don't forget is there was sadly actually a real tragedy that happened in esports specifically league of legends quite recently which is even though this individual did pass away a few months ago we were only just informed in the last couple of days via a finnish newspaper that the legendary European jungler and champion Cyanide, who most famously played for Fnatic basically his whole career, actually passed away earlier this year, apparently based on the dates it's being reported, or not that long actually after he did that League of Legends classic show match, which was kind of like the moment when If you remember, we got to have like a bunch of old pros come back and have like a moment where everyone got to see them on camera and see what they're up to, et cetera.
ThorinHOST
3:06
No one knows the circumstances of what's happened.
ThorinHOST
3:08
We just know, sadly, that he's passed away.
YamatoCannonHOST
4:06
I think the vibe of that fanatic roster was really, it was so cohesive because everyone was just on the same wavelength in terms of how they approach things.
YamatoCannonHOST
4:21
uh through that also just um showed um you know an immense amount of skill in the game too i think cyanide was insanely talented really really good at the game and uh i think that you know everyone around them everyone that spent time with him always knew this is a just a person that says it spreads just joy uh that that was my impression obviously this was a long time ago i was very young young but this is like my memory uh of the guy and It really, really makes you think like this is, you know, at the age of 31, it's crazy young and definitely had an immense impact on League of Legends.
YamatoCannonHOST
5:00
I think, you know, was it four years in Fnatic? This was a very, very strong period of Fnatic, of course, and He had an immense impact on the game and just European League of Legends in the early years because that's like the early years of League of Legends was pretty much EU League of Legends and NA League of Legends just clashing, right? And I think Cyanide was a very, very core part of EU history for sure.
ThorinHOST
5:27
Yeah, what I'll do is I'll give like the historian side of it for people who don't know, because understandably, there'll be a lot of modern fans that have heard the name or know it was a FNAC player or a teammate of Xpec and so on, but maybe they don't know who this player was.
Jacob WinnecheHOST
17:14
Are they ever going to be relevant again? I would low-key hate if it was the same conversation with Na'Vi.
Jacob WinnecheHOST
17:19
I can accept, you know, one team once in a while pulling that off, you know, like Fnatic a couple of years ago, Astralis nowadays as well.
Jacob WinnecheHOST
17:25
That conversation has died out, you know.
Jacob WinnecheHOST
17:26
FaZe is the most recent example of a team that, maybe is never going to come back to where they were.
Josh LeesmanHOST
21:30
It was peak.
Josh LeesmanHOST
21:31
And Fnatic, who went to semifinals, and Gambit, who was a world favorite the previous year and had all those EU legends like Diamond Prox and Alex Hitch, were the two teams that made it out of groups.
Josh LeesmanHOST
21:39
And then they – like I think Fnatic beat – Samsung twice, and Gambit went one and one, and then Samsung beat every other team in the group, including the NA team.
Josh LeesmanHOST
21:48
Like, I don't think it was actually nearly the same level of comparison.
Josh LeesmanHOST
21:52
The thing is, it's important that you don't rewrite history there, because, like...
QuackHOST
48:34
Paravision locked their major in by making the grand final.
QuackHOST
48:37
It wasn't a sure thing until this event, but they beat Magic, they beat Fnatic, they beat Big.
QuackHOST
48:42
Great.
QuackHOST
48:45
Liquid obviously already locked in.
KingTHOST
49:50
Because Liquid played some of the worst CS we've ever witnessed.
KingTHOST
49:59
Like genuinely dreadful.
KingTHOST
50:03
They got beat 2-0 by Fnatic, and they looked so poor.
KingTHOST
50:07
2-0 by Magic, who themselves were having a great event.
Nathan MottHOST
27:51
Hydon is a challenger in Nunu OTP back in 2020 or whatever.
Nathan MottHOST
27:56
And then he became a successful LEC coach with teams like Fnatic and stuff.
Nathan MottHOST
28:00
So how could you possibly be a Nunu OTP, which you would say is way more on the extreme.
Nathan MottHOST
28:04
That's as extreme as you can go on the supplementary side.
