So the committee of the Melbourne hospital looked at this and said, oh, we can't possibly have these women.

So they decided they would takes two more men after the sixth, the seventh and eighth, that would have knocked out Jane Greig, who was number seven.

And they were just ready to ride over the situation and let the women languish.

So Janet and Freda, the two in the top six, decided to stick to their guns and refused to go.

And congratulations.

But it was interesting looking at the old newspapers because everybody was so gobsmacked that women would enter medicine.

They called them the doctoresses or they called them Miss Greig or Miss Gamble, never Dr Greig or Dr Gamble, even though they'd graduated.

And the newspapers were so intrigued that they wrote almost every day about what they were doing in the hospital.
