Flowers As An Equalizer: Nitika Achalam, True Grit Farm and Flower
N
14:51Nitika AchalamGUEST
All of these things, not only are we able to eat them, but really they show up in a lot of our work.
N
14:57Nitika AchalamGUEST
And so we blend these medicinal plants with the edible plants, with the natives, and things that we typically think of when you think of floral design or floristry, like the roses or dahlia, large sunflowers.
N
15:10Nitika AchalamGUEST
So when folks have an arrangement in front of them, And you'll take a moment to look a little bit deeper, then you'll see some of the representation of the things that we grow on the farm, which is a huge diversity of elements, which we appreciate because we are able to work with things that grow locally that might not travel as well if we were flying those things in.
N
15:31Nitika AchalamGUEST
But because we have fresh access to them, because our farm is less than two hours away, or everything that we work with is less than two hours away, then you have access to a lot of really cool things in design.
N
16:22Nitika AchalamGUEST
Oh, I'd love that.
N
16:22Nitika AchalamGUEST
That'd be so fun.
N
16:23Nitika AchalamGUEST
So I enjoy bringing a variety of botanicals, of all sorts of things, things that folks might not think of when you think of floral design, bringing those and allowing folks, inviting them, reminding them that they already have the agency to be creative, that all of us are creative.
N
16:41Nitika AchalamGUEST
And so sometimes that looks like showing up with a bouquet bar, which is buckets, and bowls of lots of different things and inspiring people to make something unique with maybe a little bit of guidance around floral design principles and then that way you know the rules and then we encourage you to break them so that you feel a little bit more free in creating whatever it is that you want.

The Floral Labyrinth and the Dwarf Shrub Maze.
C
190:33Catherine BarbosaNARRATOR
The mention of the word maze most frequently calls to mind a block of tall shrubs penetrated by a puzzling branching path which terminates in an arbor or goal of some sort.
C
190:43Catherine BarbosaNARRATOR
But just as we have seen that the horticultural maze is far from being the sole form of expression of the idea, so we must now recognize that even in horticulture the well-known hedge maze is not the only type of verdant labyrinth.

This proceeding was incumbent on all guests, high and low alike, and was intended to inculate humility.

The order of precedence having been mutually agreed upon while resting in the machiai, the guests one by one will enter noiselessly and take their seats, first making obsiescence to the picture or flower arrangement on the tokonoma.

The host will not enter the room until all the guests have seated themselves, and quiet reigns with nothing to break the silence, save the note of the boiling water in the iron kettle.

the kettle sings well for pieces of iron are so arranged in the bottom as to produce a peculiar melody in which one may hear the echoes of the cataract muffled by clouds of the distant sea breaking among the rocks a rain-storm sweeping through the bamboo forest or the sowing of pines on some far-away hill even in the daytime the light in the room is subdued for the low eaves of the slanting roof admit but few of the sun's rays everything is sober in tint from the ceiling to the floor the guests themselves have carefully chosen garments of unobtrusive colours the mellowness of age is over all everything suggestive of recent acquirement being tabooed save only the one note of contrast furnished by a bamboo dipper and the linen napkin both immaculately white and new however faded the tea-room and the tea equipage may seem everything is absolutely clean not a particle of dust will be found in the darkest corner for if any exists the host is not a tea-master one of the first requisites of the tea-master is the knowledge of how to sweep clean and wash for there is an art in cleaning and dusting a piece of antique metal work must not be attacked with the unscrupulous zeal of the dutch housewife Dripping water from a flower vase need not be wiped away, for it may be suggestive of dew and coolness.

Our legends ascribe the first flower arrangement to those early Buddhist saints who gathered the flowers strewn by the storm and in their infinite solicitude for all living things placed them in vessels of water.
