Fitzgerald Inquiry

I went through the prison system first, so I, I thought if I can't get around through the, through the size and weight thing...

Eventually what they did was they, uh, had the Fitzgerald inquiry up here, of course, and they decided they were gonna get rid of all the size and weight, uh, male, female, that type of stuff, and they were just gonna take basically the best applicant for the job.

So it didn't matter what size you were.

But they also wanted education.

You look back and it was, it was a bit of fun.

Um, what was the challenges early in, in your policing career when you're, you're out on the street? W- did the type of training that you got prepare you for it, or was it a matter of learning-- you weren't-- learning your skills and trade out in the real world?

I came in, uh, as I say, I came in just after the Fitzgerald Inquiry, so, well, actually the, the recommendations hadn't been-- had been sent out, but they hadn't actually been instigated, if that makes sense.

We had to sit through a two-day course of it, uh, a couple years into my service.

For that 100 years, we have had, and anyone can look up, a history that has led to some pretty dark history.

And I think it was probably when the Fitzgerald Inquiry occurred, it really pulled apart how bad and corrupt our systems had allowed.

And our committee system was developed in a way I call it a de facto upper

house.

And I think sometimes we've got to go back to a level playing ground.

And I'll use one example.

Under the previous government, after the Fitzgerald inquiry, donations from developers were banned.
