I didn't get that jumper, but I did get a message in my Facebook inbox from someone saying that their boyfriend's dad had received a Fisk jumper.

On shows like Arrow and Daredevil, characters are constantly talking about the city as if it's a living thing in crisis.

Arrow will have lines like, 'Queen Consolidated can't help but survive if the city it's located in is dying,' while Fisk talks about rebuilding the city, 'I wanna carve something beautiful out of its ugliness and set free its potential.' Whatever you think of the quality of these shows, I often feel like the writing tells us far more about the city than the show itself actually demonstrates.

We hear that it's dying, corrupt, abandoned, worth saving, but outside of some rundown buildings, crime scenes, or establishing shots, I'm not sure we've ever been made to understand what has been lost, who is affected, or why these characters feel such ownership over the place.

I'm not ex- exactly expecting The Wire from these adaptations, but with places like Gotham or Blüdhaven being so important to their characters, how would you approach making a city feel like a living, breathing part of a film or television adaptation? What would you need to show us so that when Batman, Nightwing, Fisk, or Daredevil talked about what the city deserves or what it become, could become, it actually means something to the viewer, or does it even matter?"

Um, I, I, I think d- Marvel has the easy way out on that, 'cause they use real cities.
