new film starring Olivia Colman.
Chris OlsonHOST
23:27
And Olivia Colman plays a character known as Fisherwoman, an outcast in her local village.
Chris OlsonHOST
23:33
And she essentially barters her goods amongst all the sneering, enduring locals who constantly tease her for things like smelling like fish and being a pretty sort of outcast character.
Chris OlsonHOST
23:46
She decides to get back at the community by... employing the services of Peter Dinklage's character, who is a basket weaver, but he has the ability to sort of weave magic into his creations.
George PundekHOST
1:29
So, Wicca is set in sort of a distant folkloric period of England, you know, and everyone is referred to by their job titles.
George PundekHOST
1:39
So, Olivia Colman plays Fisherwoman, and she lives kind of a bit of a reclusive life on the outskirts.
George PundekHOST
1:45
She kind of keeps herself to herself, and when she goes into town, she goes to market to sell her fish, and everyone else is there, and you have people called Bottlewasher and Taylor's Daughter and Doctor's Wife.
George PundekHOST
1:55
Which...
George PundekHOST
3:05
Who is sort of the main woman and quite bitter, you know, looking down her nose kind of person.
George PundekHOST
3:11
Yeah.
George PundekHOST
3:13
Early on in the film, there's a wedding and through various plot circumstances, you know, Olivia Comyn's character, Fisherwoman, becomes sort of, you know, aware of her loneliness.
George PundekHOST
3:23
She's sort of teased about her loneliness.
GavinHOST
28:25
And always seems to cause a huge amount of discomfort, which I'm sure is the point.
GavinHOST
28:32
And then when Fisherwoman takes the Wicker husband as her own, it just shows everyone else the way that a relationship can be because their relationship is far more in line with what I guess we would say is a as a healthier relationship, a more equal relationship.
GavinHOST
28:57
And so when the women of the village see this, and by the way, Alexander Skarsgård, even as a basket, is kind of easy on the eye.
HelenHOST
29:05
Yes, absolutely.
Miranda MoffatHOST
31:43
You are not your own person.
Jesse McAnallyHOST
31:46
Which is done hilariously because, you know, the Fisherwoman, who is Olivia Colman's character, is... is the working person in the wicker relationship so then he becomes the fisher woman's husband so to say uh they they play a lot with like the gender roles and like who does what and for what we see it seems the women are doing the same jobs as their husbands in this town but getting none of the credit and none of the dick that they want either um I thoroughly enjoyed this.
Jesse McAnallyHOST
32:25
I don't really know how to go deeper into it, and the only thing I really wanna highlight is, without going into spoilers, is there is a practical puppet in the third act that is so wonderful and so endearing, and I loved every bit of it, and congrats to the entire special effects team for making that look so good, because on paper, You could end up with, you know, the movie Annette.
Jesse McAnallyHOST
32:52
Um, on that note, I am going to give this, um, fish and cheese, which is, uh, that's my cheese rating, which is apparently a food from the, the, the, the town of Gander as shown off in, uh, come from away the musical, because we got a fisher woman and she would probably eat fish and cheese.
Brandon VickHOST
32:01
She's kind of representing most of the oppressed wives that are trapped in this patriarchy.
Brandon VickHOST
32:07
Her and practically the entire rest of the village become more depraved the more that they see how affectionate and kind the wicker husband is to Coleman's Fisherwoman.
Brandon VickHOST
32:18
It's clear every woman in town wants to be treated the way that she's being treated.
Brandon VickHOST
32:23
There is a great, great scene of...
Jason EvansHOST
19:18
Alexander Skarsgård also, like, this has all the elements that should make it into a bigger film that I think it's just not going to resonate that much with audiences because I think not enough people know about it.
Jason EvansHOST
19:30
The film itself is about a woman who is, she's named Fisherwoman.
Jason EvansHOST
19:36
It takes place in Renaissance, you know, old England in the countryside.
Jason EvansHOST
19:40
Everyone, it's, you know, sort of a fantasy kind of world where everyone is named for their job.
Jason EvansHOST
21:06
It becomes a lot about gender roles and what is and is not socially acceptable.
Jason EvansHOST
21:12
It's sort of interesting that she does the work.
Jason EvansHOST
21:15
Fisherwoman does the work.
Jason EvansHOST
21:16
The wicker husband, by the way, not the wicker man.
Aisha HarrisHOST
8:52
But maybe the only way for them not to suffer is for them to create a man out of wicker.
Aisha HarrisHOST
8:57
And then, like, I think that for me, I agree to a point that, like, I kept having these questions about the Olivia Colman character, the fact that she does create this sentient being out of nothing who does not ask to be here like none of us asked to be here for the purposes of being her husband and the movie doesn't wrestle with those things but i do keep coming back to i was just entertained like i found this a fun slightly different way to examine all of the the tropes and the ideas around patriarchy and the way you know women are willing to settle and I think one of my favorite aspects of this is there is a scene where Wicker Husband and Fisherwoman are all like doing a dance with everyone else.
Aisha HarrisHOST
9:43
I guess it's the dance that everyone does in the village.
Olivia ColmanSOUNDBITE_SPEAKER
9:46

Olivia ColmanSOUNDBITE_SPEAKER

Alexander SkarsgårdSOUNDBITE_SPEAKER
9:54
May your marriage be as full and affirming as ours.
Aisha HarrisHOST
9:58
But their dance is a little different.
Joanna RobinsonHOST
58:03
Like, does he travel with his own lubrication in order to make sure we never run into a splintery end?
Mallory RubinHOST
58:08
I mean, I'm inclined to say no, though maybe Basket Weaver was thinking about The fact that Fisherwoman went and said, I'd like you to make me a wicker husband.
Mallory RubinHOST
58:18
And, you know, thus, what is the primary companionship? Acceptance, love, longing, but also, you know, the wedding night and the nights to follow.
Mallory RubinHOST
58:27
Wicker husband has to show up in the village and say, like, I need a suit.
