First Great Awakening

Five, we hold to the ordinance of washing one another's feet.

The separate Baptists of the South, a revival movement during the First Great Awakening, practiced foot washing as an ordinance, usually after the Lord's Supper.

By the time of Lyle's conversion, these separate Baptists and the confessional or regular Baptists from Philadelphia who came south to help mature the Baptist churches had effectively merged with some of the revivalistic practices staying on, like this one in Lyle's church.

Six, we hold to receive and admit young children into the church according to the word of God.

Somebody once asked, during the First Great Awakening, somebody asked George Whitefield the same question about John Wesley.

Wow.

And that was George Whitefield's response.

That's where that came from.

I did not know that.

First Great Awakening.

I never knew that.

We're talking about the Hebrides Revival.

We're talking about the First Great Awakening that you call the Methodist Revival.

I mean, so much of what God has done throughout the earth has had its basis here in the UK.

In fact, you know, Wesley and Whitefield all spent time up in Leicester, in fact.

So you'll find a bigger mix of people who believe on either side of that fence in Anglican churches than you would in some other more modern denominations.

In the 18th century, around 1730, the English-speaking world experienced a powerful revival known as the First Great Awakening or the Evangelical Revival.

Now, the Anglican Church, the Church of England, was... vastly dominant at this time in the UK.

And all the key figures that we're about to mention belong to the Anglican Church.

He was born in 1703, died in 1758.

Jonathan Edwards preached during what is commonly known as the First Great Awakening, a major movement of the Spirit of God.

And Jonathan Edwards is famous even today for his sermon, Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God.

You can find it published online.

You don't find it in the Protestant reformers like Martin Luther or John Calvin.

You don't find it in the revivalists of the First Great Awakening like Edwards or Whitefield.

And you certainly don't find it in Catholicism.

Now, what many people mean by personal relationship with Jesus is something like the following.

But none of them brought lasting revival.

Honestly, I think the last true revival in the Americas was the First Great Awakening with George Whitefield and Jonathan Edwards and the Wesley brothers.

That was the last real true revival.

I don't believe the Second Great Awakening was a true revival.

which nobody even talks about now, but that was going to be a huge thing, remember? This was the sign of a great movement of young people into the church.

And again, didn't happen.

But the First Great Awakening with George Whitefield, Jonathan Edwards, was a revival that was... propagated by the faithful proclamation of God's Word.

The Second Great Awakening was manufactured by emotional manipulation, as was the Ashbury Revival.
