And then because people loved to be so specific about their identity, but also loved finding connection and community through that, I never actually fit into any of that.

So I started to like let go of some of the layers to my identity, whether that was speaking Fiji Hindi more openly or like being able to embrace different foods that were from Indo-Fijian culture.

And then I had this moment when I was probably around 20, 21 in university where I was like, Why am I doing this to myself? Like, why am I like getting rid of those layers of my identity? But it's for others.

It's not even for myself at the end of the day.

What I said in Fiji Hindi, it is that my name is Padma Narsey Lal.

I was born and brought up in Fiji.

And myself and my husband and children came to Australia in 1990.
