and uh all i'll say without spoiling it too much if there's a borehole in the middle of a wall when you fight a big massive grub uh don't go in it because that's what we did and we got a neck snap because we killed the other one um we killed this mate and it literally just murdered us and we died um but you know looking at that book and the pictures in that book just really brought me brought me home to being a kid because i i I think I've still got Death Trap Dungeon.
JPHOST
55:45
It's probably one of my favorite fighting fantasy books.
JPHOST
55:48
You know, it's like choose your own adventure, go north, go west, all that kind of stuff.
JPHOST
55:51
So, yeah.
MarkHOST
1:17
That's right.
MarkHOST
1:18
Siege of Sardath, which is, if you're unfamiliar, a fighting fantasy book from the 80s or maybe early 90s.
MarkHOST
1:24
I'm not sure how far we've got through these now.
MarkHOST
1:27
Right, he's playing.
DaveHOST
40:20
I'll get the Atari 8-bit, the Apple II and the BBC set up because they're not set up.
DaveHOST
40:25
meanwhile it will allow me to tidy this space up and get everything fully usable all the time i've also been squirreling away a setup for playing fighting fantasy games i've suddenly got a notion to play those early 80s game books i'm super keen to do it so i've bought myself some dice a nice tray pads to make notes on and maps because i'm going to do it properly this time um And I haven't actually opened the books yet.
DaveHOST
40:51
But I'm going to do that soon.
DaveHOST
40:52
I'm going to do that soon.

Hello and welcome to Fantastic Fights, the podcast about a middle-aged man playing adventure game books out loud on the internet.
Hieronymus J. DoomHOST
0:25
That middle-aged man is me, Hieronymus J. Doom, and this episode we're playing Tomb of the Golden Skull, the latest and last fighting fantasy book at the time of recording in October 2026.
Hieronymus J. DoomHOST
0:38
Wow, that is a lot to take in.
Hieronymus J. DoomHOST
0:41
Tomb of the Golden Skull was, of course, written by Ian Livingstone, and there's interior and cover art by Karl Kopinski.
Hieronymus J. DoomHOST
2:47
Kapinski's work was a huge part of my early to mid-twenties.
Hieronymus J. DoomHOST
2:50
I wish him all the best for his recovery and do check out Factory Fortress Inc. and Karl Kapinski if you want to contribute to that very worthy cause.
Hieronymus J. DoomHOST
3:00
It's a slightly surreal feeling to be looking at the cover of the last fighting fantasy book in the main series.
Hieronymus J. DoomHOST
3:06
It's a slightly surreal cover as well, which depicts a goblin outside a cave walking towards the viewer with a burning warhammer in one hand and a net of some sort in the other.
CianHOST
4:52
Alright, there you go.
CianHOST

So, I've always been fascinated by the idea of... of a an ultimate haunted house shall we say and during my reading career I've had a few of these which I've kept in my head as kind of you know examples of this so when I was a kid and I was into fighting fantasy books I was particularly taken with the house of hell book from the 1980s which was the only one set in the modern day times most of those fighting fantasy novels are kind of set in a medieval world and of course they are like choose your own way adventures with kind of rudimentary rpg elements and the house of hell book which was written by steve jackson my copy actually is signed by steve jackson and i got it signed at a a visit to fighting fantasy fest several several years ago now i think just before covid actually And that was in London, that was brilliant.
CianHOST
5:48
And so that to me has been always a, has remained in the back of my head as an example of a kind of an Ur haunted house just because the way that book is written, it's like full of tricks and traps.
CianHOST
6:02
The geography of the house is twisty and turny and it just gives you that oppressive feeling of being trapped in a place that you're never ever going to get out of.

This week it's time for us to conclude our fighting fantasy adventure playthrough of Space Assassin.
BrendanHOST
0:17
We've made it through two episodes, survived the dangerous throne at us and somehow managed to make it this far.
BrendanHOST
0:22
However, being our last episode for book number 12, we all know it's coming to an end and the biggest unanswered question so far is, how? Will it be success or will it be failure? It's time to get into the thick of it one last time and let's find out how this story ends.

cyrus suck my balls
Shannon EnoHOST

The fourth one is Fantasy World Dizzy for the ZX Spectrum loose.
Shannon EnoHOST
17:58
And the last one is Fighting Fantasy.
Shannon EnoHOST
18:02
For the 3DS, loose.
John CumminsHOST
18:08
Okay.
Shannon EnoHOST
19:57
All right.
Shannon EnoHOST
19:58
Well, the breakdown of that.
Shannon EnoHOST
20:01
Fantasy Life for 3DS Loose was $29.58. Granblue Fantasy Versus for the PlayStation 4 Complete is $20.92. Fantasy for the Apple II Loose was $40.48. Fantasy World Dizzy for the ZX Spectrum Loose was $6.63. Or you can get Complete for $6.90. And Fighting Fantasy for the 3DS Loose was $68.09.
John CumminsHOST
20:36
Yeah, the robot was only $4.30 off.
Paul BimlerGUEST
3:49
that adventure that you could direct yourself sort of thing.
Paul BimlerGUEST
3:53
And even before that, like, I mean, fighting fantasy game books, that was actually my first RPG experience was Steve Jackson and Ian Livingston.
Paul BimlerGUEST
4:04
And then probably D&D straight after that.
Paul BimlerGUEST
4:06
But, you know, the Warlock of Firetop Mountain, I think that was probably the first RPG for a lot of kids, a lot of Gen X kids in that era, you know, who were like, playing D&D or finding fantasy games, Gamebox with like Billy Idol and Depeche Mode playing in the background, New Order, you know what I mean? So, yeah, got into that.

35 MINS LATER

Paul BimlerGUEST
39:53
But you actually want to make it so, no, if you didn't have that, you would have failed kind of thing.
Paul BimlerGUEST
39:58
So I like doing that.
Paul BimlerGUEST
40:00
And I'm not afraid to do that in terms of like some of those old school fighting fantasy game books.
Paul BimlerGUEST
40:06
Sometimes the wrong choice would mean death.
Paul GroganHOST
15:35
In some respects I have, and in other respects I haven't.
Paul GroganHOST
15:38
The other thing to mention as well is the Fighting Fantasy books, which I played a lot as a kid, and then didn't touch them for like 30 years, and I've covered a few of those on the channel.
Paul GroganHOST
15:47
So it's been nice to go back to certain things from my past, which have turned out to be better than expected, but that isn't the case with all of them.
Paul GroganHOST
15:56
Next question from John.
