Bob AddisionGUEST
2:36
got to know him shane was this awesome show called and it was a fake one a satire called fernwood tonight and fred willard was his co-host uh martin played a guy named barth gimble and uh willard played his sidekick jerry hubbard and it was the set is hilarious it's from the late 70s if you can find it it's ridiculously stupid but ridiculously funny His acting helped pay for him to be a prolific painter.
Bob AddisionGUEST
3:10
Really? And I had no idea.
Bob AddisionGUEST
3:13
So I'm going to, we all are going to get to explore Martin Mull as a painter in the latter part of his, well, for the last 30 or 40 years, it was financed by his acting gigs.
Kate CaseyHOST
3:47
If you grew up in the eighties and nineties, there's a good chance that Martin Mull was in your living room even before you knew his name.
Kate CaseyHOST
3:55
He was Colonel Mustard in Clue.
Kate CaseyHOST
3:57
He was Leon, Roseanne's boss on Roseanne, Principal Kraft on Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Gene Parmesan, the private eye of disguises on Arrested Development, and late in his career, he earned an Emmy nomination for Veep.
Kate CaseyHOST
4:12
And then there's Mr.
Neil BerkeleyGUEST
6:57
[laughs]
Kate CaseyHOST
6:58
Oh my gosh.
Kate CaseyHOST
6:59
I, you know, I probably am, am of the age where I was introduced to him first through Clue and Mr.
Kate CaseyHOST
7:05
Mom.
Cameron LouisHOST
33:08
Oh, Martin Mull.
RaveyHOST
33:11
I'm sure they're gonna have clips from Fernwood Tonight, which I discovered on Nick at Nite, and Fernwood Tonight was, like, a fake late-night, low-budget talk show coming from-
Cameron LouisHOST
33:23
Mm-hmm
RaveyHOST
33:23
...
RaveyHOST
33:30
I'm...
RaveyHOST
33:30
I think CBS maybe.
RaveyHOST
33:32
Um, but, like, Fernwood Tonight would run in the late night spot, like, for, like, a s- an entire summer, and Martin Mull was the egocentric, arrogant host.
RaveyHOST
33:43
His name was Barth Kimball-
Michael BuninHOST
19:51
So Martin Mull was a big deal for me, I think Jamie too, and for Gaffigan.
Michael BuninHOST
19:57
I mean, I just, you know, forget Fernwood Tonight and all that stuff, but like...
Michael BuninHOST
20:02
i was which we all watched that his stand-up alone
Jamie KalerHOST
20:05
mr mom every movie he shows up and he's
Jason ColvinHOST
18:16
Yeah.
Dee GravesHOST
18:17
And Norman Lear wants to put this kind of parody talk show that parodies things like The Johnny Carson Show out there, and he- it's gonna be called Fernwood Tonight.
Jason ColvinHOST
18:28
Yes.
Jason ColvinHOST
18:29
[laughs] Oh, my gosh.
Dee GravesHOST
19:10
Who, of course, goes on to be the dad in Growing Pains, right?
Jason ColvinHOST
19:12
Right.
Dee GravesHOST
19:13
So anyway, Fernwood Tonight is this vehicle that Martin Mull is in and does 54 episodes of this show.
Dee GravesHOST
19:20
And on July 4th, 1977 and August 17th, 1977, there's a character on the show called Mayor Merle Jeeter.
