Fernand Léger

Here, we're looking at, uh, a work by Paul Klee.

There's also Fernand Léger, Franz Marc, uh, Picasso, and later on, um, at the second rotation, we'll see people like Anni Albers and Sonia Delaunay.

So in any case, we're standing in front of Paul Klee, um, and there's this watercolor, and what he's done is he's taken...

Sort of he's made this light yellow border, and then, um, in between are sort of, um, pastel shapes.

It consists of seven segments, each individually directed by a modern art legend.

Libby and Josh White provide the soundtrack for the second segment, called The Girl With the Mechanical Heart, written and directed by cubist painter Fernand Léger.

Just over seven minutes long, this short film within the film tells the story of a woman who dreams of romance and then flees from it once she finds it.

The imagery consists of fetishistic photography of mannequins, sometimes animated from off-screen as though they were puppets, with cutaways to fabric flowers, rhinestones, and a mechanized sculpture of a spinning wheel.
