Fender Bassman

You won't find a four-tier boutique pedalboard in a basement rehearsal space in New York or a garage in Detroit.

In most scenes, musicians relied on an eight-track recorder and a single practice amp that was usually a 10-watt Fender Bassman or a battered Marshall stack.

The high-gain saturation they could pull from those units was as much a technical limitation as it was an aesthetic choice.

That scarcity forced guitarists to lean into minimalism, fewer chords, fewer embellishments, and in many ways shaped punk's one-chord song doctrine that later generations would interpret as a form of musical purity.

So if we scoop that here, [bass guitar music] we get this more hi-fi, more of, yeah, enhanced bass tone, so you can turn up the, the bass.

By the way, it's a Fender Bassman amp model or tone stack, so this is, yeah, kind of for like the ba- for, to, to use with the bass.

[bass guitar music] But it's too much.

A Gibson ES-5 or an ES-250 or another full hollow body with P90s.

A Fender Bassman or vintage style Fender tube combo.

And effects? None.

Just guitar straight into the amp with the volume turned up enough to produce a little natural tube compression.
