Fear

And so she picked up a bunch while I was going through the Criterion sale at Barnes and Nobles.

And she picked up Fear.

This is the movie from 1996 starring Mark Wahlberg, Reith Witherspoon, Reese Witherspoon, Alyssa Milano, and William Peterson from Manhunter or from CSI, as a lot of you people probably know, if you even remember what CSI is.

Again, this movie is from 1996.

Gene Hackman, dude.

And then from there, he did, I think, two of the Fifty Shades of Grey movies.

So that being said, this was my first time watching Fear.

Little would we know watching this movie that the two leads would be the biggest movie stars in America.

... that he's put out.

I mean, The Other Guys, Ted, Boogie Nights, Fear, Part of the thing at the-

The Fire

... yeah, I mean, just all of these great movies that I still love.

Yeah.

So that's why I put Wahlberg ahead of him.

Yeah, there's no Fear in there.

No. No.

I'm down with...

Like, I saw Fear at Night.

That was the first...

I, I think we talked about this, but that's the first time I saw Mark Wahlberg be a bad person, and it rubbed me the wrong way.

I haven't been able to see Mark Wahlberg the same.

What? Which one did he do?

Fear.

Fear.

Well, we decided to return with something that we had planned before anyway.

We decided to come back and talk about 1996's Fear.

This was directed by James Foley.

This stars Mark Wahlberg, Reese Witherspoon, Alyssa Milano.

I don't know if you had a chance to see that.

I'm a big fan of that movie.

That is definitely one that if you guys are checking out Fear, go back and check out that at some point.

It's a really good movie with Sean Penn and Christopher Walken.

He is just, I'm telling you, it's like y- you understand where he and Mark, you know, th- this is a family affair.

Like you go back to Mark Wahlberg in Fear and the yelling and like, you know, "I'm coming in the house." Like, "Let me in the house." Like he, these guys can get angry.

These are Southie guys.

[laughs]

But despite its success, especially on non-commercial airwaves, the track's true entry into pop culture mythology wouldn't arrive for another four years.

Actually, in 1996, director James Foley selected The Sundays' cover for a highly provocative sequence in his psychological thriller Fear, starring Mark Wahlberg and Reese Witherspoon.

Foley placed the hypnotic recording over a suspenseful scene aboard a moving roller coaster.

Wheeler's tender delivery against a visual backdrop of the mounting thrill ride tension burned the performance deep into '90s pop culture.
