[upbeat music] Before its release in 2023, it was known that Fast X was going to be the first installment of a two-part finale to send the franchise off in style.

Universal Studios seemingly backed this plan by green-lighting a $340 million budget, which would cement the film as the fifth most expensive of all time when it released.

All the lights appeared to be green for this storied franchise's send-off, until the movie sped face first into a subpar reception at the box office.

While the film did almost double its budget in gross worldwide earnings, pulling in a cool $718 million, Universal Studios thought the overall return was a little low for what they had invested, so they pumped the brakes on green-lighting production on the sequel and finale, the part two of two of Fast X, which famously ended on an impossible cliffhanger.

The finale now needed to not only deliver a high-octane finish for La Familia, the characters we have watched for nearly two decades now, but also make the studio a little more whole in terms of box office grosses.

So, the studio sent the script for the finale back to the writers' room, then fired the writers, then hired new writers, then fired those writers for new writers two more times.

Fast and Furious is $155.

Fast X is $146.

The Fast and the Furious is $144.

Too Fast to Furious is $127.

The re-release this past August brought in $4.5 million.

Yeah, so Fast X was $146 million domestic, opening on a $67 million gross in 2023.

Which, I mean, here we are in 2026, then you start filming in 27, you could have it buy out by 28.
