I heard about ABC Rural really for the first time and quite a number of broadcasters who had studied agricultural science and then were reporting on agricultural matters and I thought wow that sounds like fun I was naturally curious and nosy I love meeting people I love stories and so that's when I started volunteering with ABC Rural in Sydney and in lots of other states because luckily as part of that program we were encouraged to do professional work experience more than 18 weeks in order to graduate and so whilst working on farms all around the country I would also go in and try and volunteer at the local ABC rural or ABC regional offices and that just gave me even more of a sense of what was involved in communications and journalism and I thought that's what I want to do but it's very hard still to get a job in media and at the ABC.

I ended up going and working as an agronomist in the UK for a period of time in beautiful northeast Anglia before getting my first job as a print media journalist for Farmers Weekly which was then a weekly magazine with a fledgling online component And off the back of that then was very fortunate to be given my break at the ABC as the Catherine Rural Reporter, which is an isolated solo position in the top end of the Northern Territory.

Spent a year there, then another year in Kununurra in the Kimberley, again a solo operator position before then being invited to host the Northern Territory Country Hour out of Darwin, eventually moving into the newsroom and current affairs and then coming down to Canberra where I've been So it's been about 22 to 23 years with the ABC.

It's been a wonderful career.

Olivia Caldwell was the author of a story about a young Catlin South Otago farmer who leads an interesting life, to say the least.

He has over 60,000 followers on his three social media channels.

And went to go drive tractors for a fellow for the summer.

And then I was going to go overseas and Somehow I ended up managing a farm at 20 years old and sort of stuck around.

Yeah, well, I'm reading from the story here in Farmers Weekly.

In part, you didn't like Lincoln University because you didn't enjoy living with close neighbours.
