Fairfield Porter

I was doing that.

So after an undergrad, this is like an undergrad, I was making Fairfield Porter style derivative paintings because the school that I went to, Indiana, was almost like an academy.

They would not tell you to make these things, but there was a lot of, I think, pressure to kind of paint like they painted.

And I think a lot of teachers don't realize the... influence they're having they might not tell you directly hey paint like this but they'll encourage you in certain ways and whatever it is anyway so i came out of that and i was doing those paintings still in grad school and then tim the same teacher tim van laar said you got to knock off this indiana thing and i was like what do you mean indiana i don't i'm just painting you know it's just how people paint so that really really shook things up and i had the kind of a number of existential crises in grad school which then i started doing these like quote plein air paintings from the inside of from like video games because the the time would change in the video so it got a little conceptual and i did love that it was fun it was fun but i was still kind of thinking about landscape and these ideas and then after grad school i started painting from composite photos that i was making and got into these sort of like collage images still with landscape ideas.

Yeah, I just got back from, I was at Golden, the Golden Foundation this summer.

And then after that, a kind of mutual friend of ours, Neil Callender, has developed this relationship with the family of Fairfield Porter.

And I was able to spend a week painting on Fairfield Porter's family island in Maine, where he made all those, you know, great Spruce Head Island paintings.

It's incredible.
