They are doing it because they have a profound pathological psychological need to assume the sick role itself, to be a patient, to be cared for by medical professionals.

So just to summarize, malingering is straightforward fraud driven by external incentives.

Factitious disorder is a severe psychiatric condition driven by an internal need for the sick role achieved through deception.

And somatic symptom disorder involves no deception at all.

But what is the factitious? Because now it's factitious disorder imposed upon another or upon self.

Yeah, so, I mean, that's just been the prevailing story as much as in by proxy.
