So my favorite philosopher, F.H. Bradley's got a quip similar to that, but he says, metaphysics is the finding of bad reasons for what we believe upon instinct.

But to find those reasons is no less an instinct.

Now, how seriously he meant that, I don't know.

which is maybe similar to what you said Wilfred Sellers was getting at.

The idea is that you're trying to wrap your arms around the greatest number of elements of reality in terms of both how we think about reality, how we experience reality, our moral sphere and everything, and try to come up with some way of making sense of this whole thing.

And you will start from what Bradley calls instinct.

I would more call it a sort of a fundamental posture that we take to making sense of everything.
