Because while one can certainly see an aesthetic through-line from his debut, The Bird with the Crystal Plumage, into the technicolor worlds of Suspiria and Inferno, stylistically, Tenebrae is unlike any of the films that he had directed up to this point.

Instead of the Baroque and Expressionist style to which fans had become accustomed, he took visual inspiration for this film from the world of US TV shows like Charlie's Angels and Columbo, crafting a film that is shot in stark whites and muted colours, with a soundtrack that moves away from progressive rock and into the world of new wave electronica.

That's not to say, though, that it's entirely removed from his works altogether.
