The reason that the point system works is because it takes historic data and it tries to predict high earners that is that's what it was designed to do and it's worked really well in the past but recently we kind of got in the way of it by adding these categories and saying hey this thing works so well let's use it to admit people for transportation so that we have enough pilots and let's use it to admit people who are educators and And in doing that, even though intuitively it makes sense, these are pressing areas of need for the country, by putting those categories within the point system, we get in the way of letting that system do what it was intended to do.
Jackie PichetteGUEST
25:47
And so Canada has right now, there are 10 categories in the express entry system, which is our point system.
Jackie PichetteGUEST
25:54
And essentially those categories create, if you think of the point system as a lineup of people wanting to get in and they're kind of ordered by their points.
Jackie PichetteGUEST
26:03
Now we have categories that create different lineups.
Jackie PichetteGUEST
27:07
I just don't think that we can do them both at the same time in the point system.
Jackie PichetteGUEST
27:12
So the solution to me is to have your point system working the way it has historically with one or maybe a few categories and then to have categories at the provincial level separate.
Jackie PichetteGUEST
27:26
from the point system or maybe our provincial nominee program can draw from the point system by nominating people through the provincial nominee program who have been scored in the express entry program.
Jackie PichetteGUEST
27:43
But not having those categories within our system and kind of chunking things up.

It's supposed to make it easier for doctors and others with needed skills.
Ilya BrotzkyGUEST
16:47
If you're making at least that and you can prove it, you have a letter, you have bank statements, you know, obviously it has to be legit, um, give that person a, let's say three-year work permit, and then give them a path to permanent residency.
Ilya BrotzkyGUEST
16:58
That's actually probably the biggest challenge right now is we have thousands of people, and I hear this almost every day from engineers who have moved here in the last few years, they're stuck on work permits, and they can't get their permanent residency because, uh, basically in order to get PR right now through Express Entry, which is kind of the federal program that invites, uh, every month a certain amount of people to, to get a p- uh, their, their PR, you have to be under 30, speak French, and have a PhD, [chuckles] uh, basically, um, which is very rare, right? So the, that, that's something as well that's, um, made it hard 'cause people move here or they wanna move here, but then, "Okay, I'm gonna...
Ilya BrotzkyGUEST
17:31
Am I gonna be on a work permit for the rest of my life?" And then you're kinda looking at the same problem that the US has with their green card holders or H-1B visas, uh, holders who can never get their green cards.
Ilya BrotzkyGUEST

AaronHOST
1:54
For those who were stuck at 7 or an 8 and finally managed to get a 9 plus in their speaking or writing, what exactly did you change? Was it vocabulary, your structure, your grammar, speaking naturally, idea development, timing, or was it something else? I would really appreciate any genuine advice, strategies or resources that help you improve.

Rob BeckHOST
20:55
Do you have to get any of that?
Peter ShinGUEST
20:56
Yeah, you have to get the LMIA for your work permit and then go to the IRCC and you can see if you qualify for express entry or not, or non-express entry.
Peter ShinGUEST
21:06
So the difference is basically time, you know, because if you qualify for express entry, you can get your permanent residence, they say, maybe in eight months to a year.
Peter ShinGUEST
21:16
If it's non-express entry, then it's maybe a year and a half or so, is what I've heard.
Peter ShinGUEST
21:21
Um, and so I actually did not qualify for expense entry.
Peter ShinGUEST
21:24
It was, I was kind of surprised, but we didn't have enough points as a point system that you have to do based on like, if you've worked in Canada before, like your age, your, your English proficiency exam results, you know, things like that.
