Expo 86

Craig T. writes, I have a special place of skate history I'm thinking of selling.

In 1986, I went to the Expo 86 to a skate contest wearing a Parwellender shirt with a Sharpie in hand.

Autographs on the shirt include Tony, Rodney, Hassoy, Johnny Copp, Reggie Barnes, Eric Nash, Steve Stedham, Blender, Lance, and one other.

Is anyone interested?

I, I knew all the guys in the band too.

So and they, they shut down Expo 'cause they had a mini riot at Expo '86 after they dropped their pants and just kind of hooligany.

I feel like we gotta do a separate show just on bands that lived in Strathcona-

Or, yeah

We immigrated to Vancouver.

Just in time for Expo.

Expo, yeah.

I was there.

I was there, Expo 86.

And I was nine years old.

And the way we chose...

So really, Public Policy Forum or one of these smart think tanks out there needs to work with you and have a really conference dedicated on, A, how do we get the cost down? And B, what are the various options that we can look at? The final point I have, I have taken the train to Vancouver, Reese.

I took the Canadian with my grandfather as a kid to see Expo 86.

I was 13.

That's very cool.

I grew up in the 1980s, so Man in Motion was very much a part of my imagination as a kid in Kelowna.

It was Trevor Linden, Expo 86, Bill Van Der Zandt, the Coca-Cola, and the Man in Motion.

It really is a privilege to speak to you today, Rick, and I'm really excited about our conversation.

It was more of a challenge, maybe with my buddies and their bikes and me with the wheelchair and the trailer behind.

But I was in the middle of my Paralympic career, at the peak of my career, and And it wasn't really until one of our sponsors and a fellow named Bill McIntosh with Nike Canada, I was coming up, hopefully he was going to give me a couple uniforms, and we were chatting.

He says, hey, do you ever think about wheeling around the world? I go, yeah, why? He says, well, Expo 86 coming to Vancouver, and they're looking for off-site communication.

And I said, yeah, I'm really interested, but I'm interested in... you know, in doing it for purpose and, you know, creating awareness, you know, removing barriers for people with disabilities and showing what's possible.

Um, and she was really big in the '70s and '80s in Quebec, and, uh, in the mid-'80s she had an English album trying to break through, uh, into that English musical world in Canada, and wasn't very successful.

However, successful enough to be invited to sing on this song, but also she sang one of the opening songs for Expo 86.

Oh, my goodness.
