But, you know, it's obviously-
Michael CassellHOST
5:26
Story song expanded universe.
Michael CassellHOST
5:28
We talked about that in the man who shot Liberty Valance.
Michael CassellHOST
5:30
There you go.

I do want to say the Night Flight to Venus album upon which Rasputin appears.
Michael CassellHOST
78:20
We have to talk a little bit about the story song Expanded Universe because do you know what songs are on there?
Dan McInerneyHOST
78:25
Tell me.
DylanHOST

Welcome back to Too Hot For TV.
DylanHOST
0:46
We are the podcast that looks at all things expanded universe.
DylanHOST
0:49
Today, we're looking at the expanded universe of Red Dwarf.
DylanHOST
0:54
I'm your host, Dylan, and I'm joined by someone who was here earlier on in the season.
DylanHOST
0:59
It's Mr. Ian Martin.

27 MINS LATER

DylanHOST
28:20
What did you think of the inclusion of the Ace Rimmer strip? Yeah.
Ian MartinGUEST
28:25
I thought it was visually brilliant.
Ian MartinGUEST
28:29
I think this was tapping into that period where Ace Freeman, like, actually, you know what? On the subject of Expanded Universe, I did have a Red Dwarf t-shirt.
Jason SwankHOST
50:46
And one thing we know about Dave, Dave was not...
Jason SwankHOST
50:52
he was not deeply ensconced into the expanded universe.
Jason SwankHOST
50:55
He was kind of like me.
Jason SwankHOST
50:56
He didn't read a lot of the novels, but he definitely was aware of the characters that were emerging and, and, and gaining popularity.
Jason SwankHOST
51:05
And, um, But he also really loved and respected the adherence to the Expanded Universe, the fans of the EU, and he loved whenever he could to tap into that canon and bring it into the stories that he was telling.
Jason SwankHOST
51:22
So for EU fans, especially the classic Legends EU, I don't think you have ever had a better shot of some of your stuff entering canon than you have with Dave Filoni at the helm.
Jason SwankHOST
51:36
I think he is your best advocate for that.
Jimmy MacHOST
52:22
Pick your lane.
Brandon WainerdiGUEST
20:26
I say that now, but every so often I get something in the mail.
Brandon WainerdiGUEST
20:28
I'm like, what? I bought all the Expanded Universe figures that come out.
Brandon WainerdiGUEST
20:32
Um...
Brandon WainerdiGUEST
20:33
But they showed the videos of the packaging you're talking about, the VHS packaging.

Brandon WainerdiGUEST

And then one day they, Uncle Hul grows a conscious and goes and does whatever else, right? But like that was one of the breaking points.
Brandon WainerdiGUEST
69:26
But one of their experiments that worked was they created life.
Brandon WainerdiGUEST
69:32
And the life that they created was, because I don't want to guess, what Star Wars character that Uncle Hul and the unnamed mad scientist at the beginning of this book created? It's expanded universe.
Brandon WainerdiGUEST
69:47
It's in this realm.
MattHOST
13:10
Very nice.
MattHOST
13:13
I finished up the Extended Universe stuff over the week.
MattHOST
13:18
I ended up just plowing through it in like a couple days.
MattHOST
13:20
What
BradHOST
8:34
middle tier, but
BenHOST
8:35
again, it's better than any of those Spider-Man, Sony, Expanded Universe stuff that we've seen over the last couple years.
BenHOST
8:41
So, Brad, I'm interested to see.
BenHOST
8:44
So, Rotten Tomatoes, if I'm off or on.
BethHOST
4:56
I think I know, but you tell me.
ShawneeHOST
4:58
It's Star Wars Extended Universe.
ShawneeHOST
5:00
Y'all on the pod have heard Beth talk at length about her love of Star Wars, including the Extended Universe.
ShawneeHOST
5:08
And this is one of those things that like when I was a kid, I'd always sort of like look at Star Wars books from afar and be like, oh.
ShawneeHOST
5:15
I would love reading one of those because I love Star Wars, but I never knew where to start.
EthanHOST
0:01
This is People's New Republic, a Star Wars podcast where we read through the expanded universe in publication order with a historical materialist lens.
EthanHOST
0:09
I'm Ethan.
JohnnyHOST
0:11
I'm, uh, Korn Torn's fuckin' Mary Sue ass.

EthanHOST
114:56
there.
EthanHOST
114:56
One of the authors of the Star Wars Essential Guide to Warfare, Jason Fry, he cited the Lusankia's emergence from the cityscape of Coruscant as the goofiest thing in the entire expanded universe.
HayleyCORRESPONDENT
115:08
I don't know that there's some
EthanHOST
115:09
pretty goofy stuff.
Jim LehaneHOST
15:01
that's like the um you you found out that the titanic sank and then went back to the beginning and went oh it's a ship
Chris KempshallGUEST
15:10
yeah 100 like that um because i just i got a copy in like a virgin megastore in florida when i was on holiday and was like oh star wars book i like star wars i like books and i'll read it so i read it and really liked it and then started going backwards to fill in the expanded universe so it took me a while in the pre-internet days to figure out where the Thrawn trilogy sat, what they were actually called, and the like.
Jim LehaneHOST
15:33
As I said, there is no official name to this trilogy.
Jim LehaneHOST
15:37
People will call it a lot of things,
Chris KempshallGUEST
19:22
Yeah.
Chris KempshallGUEST
19:23
So I earlier this year, I decided partly there's a kind of a way of doing like little fun extra bits and that of writing in that I launched like a like a monthly newsletter thing called the Historians Holonet.
Chris KempshallGUEST
19:39
um and every month subscribers get at least two newsletters but two main ones one of which is me writing about like first world war stuff i've been doing recently or historical stuff i've been doing and the other one is me revisiting the old novels of the expanded universe um and rereading them and thinking about kind of the content and some of the historical inspirations and stuff like that and pleasingly for like the the coincidence of our timeline, is that people had requested and voted for the Thrawn trilogy now.
Chris KempshallGUEST
20:10
So I got back from holiday a couple of weeks ago and I read Heir to the Empire on the plane going out on holiday.
Dan McInerneyHOST
41:16
Going three times.
