Exodus 6

After so many years of slavery and in bondage, what happened? They did not heed the voice of God.

It's written in Exodus 6, 9.

They did not heed.

The voice of Moses, which was from God.

And there are texts that make it really clear that at some point, these stories look much different than how we have them.

So for instance, Exodus 6.3 says, In Exodus 3, God has already introduced themselves to Moses and said, you know, my name is Echia, you shall tell them Echia sent you.

And then in Exodus 6, God comes back and says, hey, it's me.

I am Adonai.

But Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob knew me as El Shaddai, and they did not know me by my name Adonai.

My name's Adonai.

And Abraham goes, oh, Adonai.

And so where is the author of Exodus 6 getting this idea that Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob didn't know the name Adonai? Most likely, they had versions of these stories before them that did not have those stories or did not have the name Adonai in them.

I wrote something down here that I want you to, to put down.

According to Exodus 6, from verse 1 to 3, God reveals Himself to men dimensionally.

God reveals Himself to men dimensionally.

That means no matter how much you love God, no matter how much you seek God, you cannot know all of God in a moment.

Now open to Exodus 6 as we go through the Bible with Dr. J. Vernon McGee.

Friends, our study brings us to the sixth chapter of the book of Exodus, and we're putting in at verse 6.

We are now getting ready for the battle of the gods when the Lord sends the plagues upon the land of Egypt.

God told him to lead his people out of Egypt and out of slavery, and all Moses had was objections.

And we'll hear these and maybe learn something about our own impossible tasks as we study Exodus chapter 4 together.

So welcome aboard the Bible bus, find a good seat, and open your Bible, and I'll kick things off with this letter from a fellow listener named Bruce.

He writes this, I've been an utter failure at reading through the Bible in one year.

I've tried and failed many times, but when I started riding the Bible bus at the Hebrew stop back just before COVID, all things changed.

Dr. McGee helped me read through to Revelation in five years, so I kept writing and reading Genesis, Matthew, Exodus, all the way to Revelation again.

What a wonderful book the Lord has given us.

I'm still writing and reading because it is a living book, and I learn more each time I read it.

It has to do with freedom from any of these three, bondage, danger, and then generally speaking, evil.

Are we together? Let's look at two scriptures, Exodus 6:6.

Exodus 6:6, I hope I'm right.

It says, wherefore say unto the children of Israel, I am the Lord and I will bring you out.

The word bring you out there is the word deliverance.

Um, "Then the Lord appeared to Abraham and said, 'To your descendants I will give this land,' where he shows him.

And there he built an altar to the Lord who had appeared to him." And then in Exodus 6 verse 8 it says, "And I ..." So this is Abraham's long gone at this point, but God says, "I will bring you into the land concerning that which I did swear to give it to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, and I will give it to you for a heritage." God promises to be Abraham's shield and his exceedingly great reward, Genesis 15 verse 1.

Um, "After these things, the word of the Lord came to Abraham, Abram in a vision saying, 'Do not be afraid, Abram.

I am your shield, your exceedingly great reward.'" Um, and then so all of these things will definitely qualify for that.

So the Amorites are the original inhabitants, but they're really, really wicked, but God wants to make sure that he's not being unjust in evicting them before the time when their iniquity is at the level where that makes that necessary.

So God is, is patient even with them.

Um, and then Exodus 6:5-7, um, says, "And I have also heard the groaning of the children of Israel, whom the Ej- Egyptians keep in bondage, and I have remembered my covenant." So this was the covenant, this was the covenant that he's remembering, the covenant that he made with Abraham to bring them out of bondage 400 years later, which is, that's when he remembers it.

Um, and then in Exodus 12:36, God fulfills the promise that your descendants will be brought out with great wealth.

We can do it.

The Lord said to Moses, this is the top of Exodus 6.

Now you shall see what I will do to Pharaoh.

Indeed, by a mighty hand, I'm going to let them go.

In verse 5 it says, "And the Lord descended in the cloud and stood with him there and proclaimed the name of the Lord." Verse 6, "And the Lord passed by before him and proclaimed the Lord, the Lord God, merciful and gracious, long-suffering, and abundant in goodness." You know, let me just point out, and again, if you've missed any of this, please go to our website or get my living commentary or go back and re- rehearse this, because I'm not gonna go through the whole thing.

But in Exodus 6:3, Moses had tried to go down and bring the Israelites out of Egypt, and it didn't work.

Matter of fact, things got worse, and Pharaoh increased their workload, and the, and the Israelites actually turned on him.

And Moses was telling God that, "God, they hadn't been delivered.

It's actually worse.

It hadn't gotten better at all." And in Exodus 6:3, to counter Moses' doubt, the Lord said this in Exodus 6:3.

He says, "And I appeared unto Abraham, and unto Isaac, and unto Jacob by the name of God Almighty.

But by my name Jehovah was I not known to them." And this is the very first time, Exodus chapter 6 is the first time that the Lord ever revealed himself as Jehovah.
