Exodus 14

He controls the waters.

In Exodus 14, when the w- when, when the water was a barrier to His children, He controlled the water.

He told Moses, said, "Stretch your wa- your, your rod over the sea and divide it." [laughs] I pray for somebody this morning, everything that the enemy want to use to cause a barrier for you, in the journey of today, the Lord will control it.

In the name of Jesus, your Red Sea will part.

So Jehovah Nissi is first mentioned in Exodus 17.

And when I spoke previously about the Lord our Deliverer, I was like in Exodus 14.

So I really felt I had to go between those chapters and work out what happened.

So I did.

Okay.

So as we know, in Exodus 14, Moses, staff, water, Red Sea, that all happened.

And when I went back to that, I saw something different this time and I was focused more on the Israelites and their complaining.

And essentially what they were saying when they came to the Red Sea, because they couldn't see a pathway, was take us back to Egypt.

And the sources we are examining for this deep dive are two incredibly thorough theological essays titled The Lord Saved Israel and The Triumph of the Great Hand.

Yeah, and they focus relentlessly on the events of Exodus 14.

Specifically, they zero in on two verses, verses 30 and 31, which serve as the definitive verdict on the Red Sea crossing.

Right.

We are moving from the grand historical reality into the raw human panic recorded in the text, right?

Exactly.

The literary architecture of Exodus 14 is a masterpiece of tension, contrast, and ultimate reversal.

I love how the essays break this down.

You see Yahweh separate Israel from the nations to deliver her from bondage, both in Exodus 5 and Ezekiel 34.

You see the enemy forces challenge Yahweh's salvific work on his people's behalf from Exodus 14, but also Ezekiel 38.

You see Yahweh appear on this high mountain in Exodus 19, but also Ezekiel 40.

You see Yahweh provided for his residence among his people in Exodus 25 through 40, but also then Ezekiel 40 through 43 talks about Yahweh's provision.

If you re-read chapter 1, you'll realize that that means that the world was first just a ball of water, and it's only on day three that land is created.

Later on, in Exodus 14, Moses has to split the Red Sea in order for the Israelites to escape, dividing the water so that the people can live.

The pump gathers the water.

The carbon filter splits it into drinkable and not drinkable water.

And he appeared in the, uh, flame of fire.

It was the angel who appeared in the cloud and in the flame of fire, where in Exodus 14 and, and later, you know, it makes a distinction between the cloud and the angel in the cloud-

Mm-hmm

... who is also just called Yahweh in the cloud.
