[instrumental music] Daniel Lieberman, you're an evolutionary anthropologist and professor of biological sciences at Harvard University.
Ian SampleHOST
1:09
Now, usually you study the evolution of human physical activity, but for your new book, Fed Up, you've turned your attention to food.
Ian SampleHOST
1:18
Why?
Daniel LiebermanGUEST
1:19
Well, it's the next thing, you know.
Daniel LiebermanGUEST
1:21
I mean, I can't tell you how many people ask me, you know, what's more important, diet or exercise? And, uh, the answer is both, obviously.
Daniel LiebermanGUEST
1:28
And I teach physiology in, at Harvard, and I teach nutrition.
Daniel LiebermanGUEST
1:33
And just like everybody else, I'm confused about the whole diet world out there, and I, I wrote it partly because it's sort of a sequel to my last book, Exercise, but also for my own curiosity.
Daniel LiebermanGUEST
1:43
I want to, you know, evaluate all the different evidence out there about diets and, and think about it from an evolutionary perspective.
Bill BaileyHOST
1:36
So do you remember originally what you wanted to be when you grew up?
Phil LabonteGUEST
1:41
uh i mean i was i was the kid that was you know uh singing along to iron maiden songs in like the late 80s in my room pissing my uh neighbors off um so being a musician was something that i kind of always had hoped for in the 90s like music kind of changed from from being you know the uh the big hair metal bands and the metal bands kind of became you know passe or the metal kind of went to the underground for a while and that's kind of where i went to so being a musician like in a metal band kind of stopped being something that i thought was possible um but i still played in bands i still love playing shows and stuff i just thought i was gonna do it you know like on the side i'd have like whatever my day job was and then Um, you know, play shows on the weekends, see if I can get time off from the gas station or whatever it is that I ended up doing to pay the bills.
Phil LabonteGUEST

Um, and then with the resurgence of like the New England metal, uh, new, uh, the new wave of American heavy metal out of like the New England scene with like metalcore and stuff.
Phil LabonteGUEST
2:43
Um, you know, we were one of those bands that kind of were, were doing something that people cared about.
Phil LabonteGUEST
2:47
And, uh, we kinda, we kinda rode that wave.
Phil LabonteGUEST
2:50
and and made a career out of it so uh that was you know that was in the early aughts and i've been doing it for you know as my as my main gig for 25 years now or so so really really fortunate

But, you know, like...
Bill BaileyHOST
8:45
When you I mean, graduating Parris Island, I mean, once a Marine, always a Marine, you earned it.
Larry RobertsonGUEST
36:01
And then when you expand that and into an exchange with others, you amplify that reflection.
Larry RobertsonGUEST
36:07
So it's one of those ways that we can start personally, amplify what we do personally, and then connect it to other people, and I think that's always the best individual exercise.
Mahan TavakoliHOST
36:17
exercise. It is a powerful exercise, and I have to tell you, it's been on my mind the past few weeks after I read your book.
Mahan TavakoliHOST
36:26
Yuval Noah Harari, he's a tiny bit dystopian on AI, and he talks about how his concern is when AI gets to know us better than we know ourselves-
Larry RobertsonGUEST

Mm-hmm
