Evelyn Ashford

Now, she was inducted into the USA Track and Field Hall of Fame in 75. the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame in 79, and the United States Olympic Hall of Fame in 2004.

Now, in speaking of Evelyn Ashford, Flojo, and Jackie Joyner-Kersey, she said, I think I opened the gate for all of them.

Oh, for sure.

Yeah.

You need to do a special feature on all those three women now that you've done her.

Yeah.

You need to figure that out because Evelyn Ashford does not get enough.

She's so quiet.

You got to be on it and put it in order.

legendary Now my last leg, who would my last leg be? My last leg would be, man.

But I, I don't have a great appreciation for all the competing interests amongst the groups and, and where the runners themselves ultimately want this to go.

But, but in our world, I mentioned Kara Goucher during my talk, but we also had Evelyn Ashford, great Olympian, um, Judy Brown Clarke, silver medalist in 400-meter hurdles from '84.

She's our current chair on our board.

Edwin Moses, great Olympian, many of you all know.

As you dipped for the finish line and crossed it, what did you feel?

[laughs] Oh, that was the biggest anticlimax of my life, you know? It, it was one of them because I, you know, I read Evelyn Ashford.

You know, she was a great American sprint Olympic champion.

She said when she crossed the line and won the Olympics, she had this feeling of euphoria.

All the other kids would, like, take up the, the attention.

We'd get left alone, and then when Evelyn Ashford walked past, we'd say, "Excuse me, Evelyn, can we have your autograph, and can we have a photo?" And then we'd go and stand back in the corner.

Like, we were very, very good at it.

[laughs] Um, so, so, so this is our kind of first lot of athletes we ever met, I think, and I j- I mean, you're, you're better at remembering things than me 'cause you, I know you've got a kind of, um, OCD brain.

It must be probably around '91.

Yeah.

So I've just got Evelyn, I've got Zola Budd, Evelyn Ashford.

I don't remember meeting her.
