[upbeat music] My name is Patrick Geoghegan, the director of the Trinity Long Room Hub, and you're listening to a podcast recording of one of our live events.

[upbeat music] Good afternoon, everyone, and you're very welcome to the first of our panel debates as we explore the idea of creating a Europe where everyone belongs.

But it's also really a session designed to explore why our research in the arts and humanities matters, and the difference that we make to understanding some of our greatest challenges.

Uh, beside him, we have Dr. Brian Brewer, who's, uh, in, in our Department of Hispanic Studies, and he looks at the literature, social history, and political economy of early modern Spain, and is an expert on Cervantes.

Uh, beside him, Dr. Andrea Mulligan of the School of Law, who's an expert in medical law and bioethics.

And beside her, Dr. John Bosco Conama, who is director of Trinity's Center for Deaf Studies, and whose work looks at the Irish Sign Language, language rights, equality, and social justice.

And I will take my seat over, uh, at the side.

But I might begin with an opening question for everyone.
