Evangelicalism in the United States

Um, and it, it jarred me out of the stereotypes that I held as somebody who was raised in Massachusetts.

But now I look at the American Evangelical scene, and I can't, I can't do the math on how they're down with a guy who, who like this.

But anyway, having said that, it seems to me that you're saying, "Okay, yeah, I, I set aside what I view as the hypocrisy of the modern manifestations of the faith, but, like, the eternal parts around, like, let's be a kind person, I'm down with that." And actually, that kinda brings me to your recent special on HBO, Symphony.

You should watch it, HBO Max, streaming right now.

And I think it's just really, really psychologically distressing and has consequences in the world.

I actually want to read just a short clip from a book called American Evangelicals for Trump that goes through the history of the NIR and YWAM.

And But there's a section on mapping demonic activity.

Like you were talking about in Dungeons and Dragons, John, like that happens.

And what role did unlearning from evangelicalism play in your writing and your beliefs today?

So it is worth pointing out that like British evangelicalism is not equivalent to American evangelicalism.

You know, there are many theologies.

Well, there's lots of the theology is the same, but the practice is quite different.

So I always felt, critical and cautious of the evangelical part of my culture.

And even in the UK.

And I was incredibly cynical and outright disdainful of American evangelicalism, even as a young man.

And so I've always been challenging that.
