He was a Harvard ethnobotanist and he presented a pharmacological case for zombies in a 1983 article in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology and later in two popular books, The Serpent and the Rainbow and Passage of Darkness, the Ethnobiology of the Haitian Zombie.

You've heard the notion that zombies were poisoned to the brink of death and then brought back.

I briefly mentioned it but this is the guy who really pushes this idea into the forefront.
