Estelle Parsons

And this one is from , [coughs] excuse me, is from '75.

Stars James Earl Jones and Estelle Parsons in this biographical sci-fi drama based on the alleged 1961 alien abduction of Barney and Betty Hill.

So this is another one I think has a Blu-ray from Kino.

In the early '60s, an interracial couple undergoes hypnosis, which unlocks memories of a forgotten event on a lonely road.

She was in Spider-Man.

Uh, Estelle Parsons, born in 1927.

I'm not gonna go through all 91 of these.

There's quite a bit.

Wow, that's crazy.

Estelle Parsons, Frederick Becker, Beck Hos, Joss Ackland.

I don't know any of these actors.

I recognized Mel Brooks.

We'll miss you, Boz.

And from this movie, Estelle Parsons wins Best Supporting Actress and it wins Best Cinematography.

Nice.

The Graduate.

Okay.

Yeah, and Gene Hackman was 37, Estelle Parsons was 40, and Faye Dunaway was 26.

And 26 is more accurate to Buck in the real story, and the rest of them were like 19, 20, 21.

Yeah, yeah.

And I'm just kind of like, do we really have to watch her like run screaming into gunfire again? Is that is

that really what we want to do? So that actress, Estelle Parsons, I'm watching this movie and I had to press pause.

I had to watch it over two sittings.

And in the interim, I went to the Wikipedia to look at, I know this didn't win Best Picture.

And it managed to get nominations for all the big ones, like Picture, Director, Screenplay, Best Actor and Best Actress.

And then it got two Best Supporting Actor nominations for Hackman and for the guy that plays C.W. Moss.

And then Estelle Parsons gets nominated and wins Best Supporting Actress For playing the shrill wife of Buck.

And so I go into the second half of the movie going, what the hell? And I gotta say, once you know, maybe once I started looking for it.

It's a clue into our characters and their arcs.

We also have around here the introduction of Gene Hackman and Estelle Parsons' characters.

They are...

I mean, Gene Hackman is an icon of... new Hollywood, so him being in the film that is sort of credited with shepherding the American New Wave into existence, I guess, is very fitting.

And Estelle Parsons, she is going crazy in this role.

Her screams are insane.

There's a really cool sequence where they do a bank robbery and then the police are interviewing witnesses and this is intercut with them getting away.

And then it gets nominated for 10 Oscars.

Times reviewer noted the oddity that the book's psychiatrist thought the abduction was fantasy, while its author believed in flying saucers.

On October 20, 1975, NBC aired The UFO Incident, with James Earl Jones as Barney, Estelle Parsons as Betty, and Bernard Hughes as Simon.

Sixteen days later, an Arizona logger named Travis Walton vanished for five days and returned saying he had been taken aboard a craft.

The Harvard psychologist Susan Clancy has argued the film showed a generation of viewers how the story went.

Julian, who are you talking to this week?

This week is 98-year-old Estelle Parsons.

She's tough.

She's strong.
