You're talking about American race-based chattel slavery to slavery in the Greco-Roman Empire.

That's Esau McCaulley.

He's the Jonathan Blanchard Associate Professor of New Testament and Public Theology at Wheaton College in Illinois.

Esau is the author of several books, including his best-selling Reading While Black: African American Biblical Interpretation as an Exercise in Hope.

As plantations expanded, the domestic slave trade grew, separating families and forcing many into really harsh conditions in the Deep South.

It took almost another 60 years and a civil war for slavery to be abolished in the United States.

Esau McCaulley's, uh, ancestors were also enslaved on a plantation in Maysville, Alabama, and he tells his family's remarkable story of survival and hope in the book How Far to the Promised Land? We're gonna put a link to it in the show notes.
