Erin Lee Carr

Um, so it's so great to have you back.

We have to dive right into Love Is Blind 'cause there's so much, but if you're curious about how Emma enjoyed her maternity leave or about her daughter and everything she's been up to, we did a couple episodes after she came back from, um, maternity leave over on Rich Text, and you can find those at, uh, patreon.com/richtext where you can also find our more recent episodes, like the one we did last week on the Erin Lee Carr documentary about the 2004 reality show The Swan.

You can find-

We had fun

You can find that in our feed.

Rich Text is now on Patreon, and our latest episode was about Erin Lee Carr's new documentary on the 2004 reality show, The Swan.

Uh, so that was quite a trip to look back on that show.

Plus, a little special housekeeping, Emma is coming back from maternity leave this week.

Uh, I, I will say this.

I think Macon Blair is a better director than he is writer.

Like-

Yeah

All right.

This week I wanna mention a documentary called The Swan: Behind the Mirror, which is streaming right now on Hulu.

I will say that I consider the director, Erin Lee Carr, a professional friend.

But, uh, I wanted to just talk briefly about this doc-

Yeah.

Erin Lee Carr is a hero of our...

She gave us Murdoch [laughs] Murder-

Yes

... she had to work with, you know? [laughs]

Mm-hmm.

I mean, this woman, Erin Lee Carr, is a hero of ours, a personal hero of ours.

Yes.

Uh, if you have listened to this show for any length of time, you know I've always been fascinated with Gypsy Rose Blanchard.

In fact, we had director Erin Lee Carr on the other day.

Uh, she directed that documentary on The Swan.

Go listen to that interview I did with them, uh, on Wednesday.

... "This is not good." But I'm like-

The w- the moment between Tessa and Erin?

... are you just saying...

Yeah.

... wait, really good? Was it okay? Yeah, I think, you know, I, well, I will say this.

I will celebrate a win.

Erin Lee Carr is just an amazing documentarian filmmaker, and I've been wanting to talk to her forever.

I got to talk to her, plus two of the Swans.

I think this is ethical storytelling.

But we have the filmmaker, Erin Lee Carr, and two Swans from the first and second season, Christie Garza and Carrie Bravada, with us today.

There's a timestamp if you wanna skip directly to that.

I think this is such an amazing conversation.

I was so thrilled.

Now, Erin Lee Carr has been on my wish list to be able to talk to for a very long time.

She is a great filmmaker.

She is somebody that I really admire.

They give you shitty makeup and some hair extensions.

And then you look in the mirror and you're like, "Who the hell is that girl?" This is what Erin Lee Carr, the director, investigates in this.

So it's a new documentary.

The women who participated and some of the people who produced the show look back at what happened.

Erin Lee Carr, as I said, directed it.

She's on my show with two former contestants.

There's a real gap between the opportunity that they believed they were accepting and then the experience that they describe now.

And that we don't want them to be anything else.

In July 2008, the journalist David Carr sent his daughter Erin Lee Carr off to London for her first real job after college.

She had struggled a little bit.

She had already had the beginnings of a drinking problem.
