Enos

Re-recall what happened in the olden days when people provoked Hashem to anger.

Contemplate how Hashem dealt with corruption in the years of the generation of Enosh, which was the grandson of Adam, and the generation of Noah, ten generations from Adam.

I have to say that this is one parsha that the English not only doesn't do justice, it's like it's, it's, it's, it's nothing.

Remember, we're translating a poem, and the poetry of this parsha is just so beautiful in original Hebrew.

Understand the years of generation after generation." Rashi tells us that there's two different interpretations as to what this verse means.

Either remember how God punished the past generations, and he mentions specifically the generation of Enosh, that the oceans flooded the generation, and alternatively, the generation of the flood, that they were swamped.

That's one interpretation of what it means to consider the generations of the past.

Alternatively, what it means is, if you're not willing to dwell on the past, at least think about the future.

Chapter 32, verse 7. zecher yimei selam, recall in the olden days, binu shnei zderveder, contemplate in the years of the generation, sha'ala in the generation and the generations, meaning the generation of Enosh, referring to the generation of Noach, sha'ala vidcha v'yagetcha, ask your father, meaning the prophets, and he will tell you about God's promise, The elders, you inquire by your elders, which is the sages, and they will tell you.

And saith with the other, He begat Enos eight hundred and seven years, and begat my sons and daughters.

And all the days that Adam lived were nine hundred and thirty years: and he died.

And Seth lived an hundred and five years, and begat Enos: And Seth lived after he begat, begat Enos eight hundred and seven years, and begat sons and daughters.

[clears throat] And all the days of Seth were nine hundred and twelve years: and he died.

So there's a long life ahead for you there, brother.

And Enos lived ninety years, and begat Cainan: And Enos lived after he begat Cainan eight hundred and fifteen years, and begat sons and daughters.

And all the days of Enos were nine hundred and five years: and he died.

And Cainan lived seventy years and begat Mahalaleel: And Cainan lived after he begat Mahalaleel eight hundred and forty years, and begat sons and daughters.

And all the days of Cainan were nine hundred and ten years: and he died.

Adam, Seth, Enosh, Kenan, Mahalalel, Jared, Enoch, Methuselah, Lamech, and Noah.

And most of you who are familiar with our materials know that if you translate those names from their Hebrew roots, they spell a sentence.

There's a hidden message in this genealogy.

But Enosh means mortal.
