The cloud of witnesses that he goes on to describe is He will say the words by faith, then he'll give the name of the witness, and then he'll tell you what the witness did.
Tony EvansSOUNDBITE_SPEAKER
24:27
He will say by faith, this witness, Abraham, Abel, Noah, Enoch, Sarah, Rahab, on and on, and then he'll tell you what they did by faith.
Tony EvansSOUNDBITE_SPEAKER
24:42
So the testimonies that he gives in 11 leading him to talk to us beginning in chapter 12 is a testimony that the key to making it and not giving up is learning to live by faith.
Tony EvansSOUNDBITE_SPEAKER

So that's the key.
Daniel VitalisHOST

And then it happens again in Genesis 6, if you're into that genre.
Daniel VitalisHOST

and the expansion into Enoch, and you see, okay, this is an exchange for technology.
Daniel VitalisHOST
26:54
And this is something that we see around the world in a lot of traditions, is this idea that human beings have traded something for technology, and that that's put us into...
Daniel VitalisHOST
27:03
Almost like we forfeited dominion or we've given ourselves or our world over to something else in exchange for this technology.
Gavin OrtlundGUEST
60:21
I think the first testimonies we get of that among Christians are many hundreds of years into church history.
Gavin OrtlundGUEST
60:30
And routinely, the people translated to heaven are spoken of as Enoch and Elijah.
Gavin OrtlundGUEST
60:36
Enoch and Elijah for like 300, 400 years.
Gavin OrtlundGUEST
60:39
And then this slowly starts to come in.
Gavin OrtlundGUEST
60:41
from uh the first text i can find this in is in a heterodox text in the mid-third century probably book of mary's repose and that's that has gnostic leanings it's it's very much outside of the church and so some scholars say fifth century is where the idea of mary's bodily assumption is really getting traction within the church late fifth century which is very late you think about that so and then similarly with the immaculate conception I just think there's so many church fathers and other early Christian writers who seem to just assume that Mary was sinful, though a great woman of God, she did need to be forgiven of her own personal sins.
Jase RobertsonHOST
21:07
But before you give yours, I did another thing.
Jase RobertsonHOST
21:10
Because you think, well, what does this have to do with modern day? Because we're going to really take some rabbit holes, especially when it comes to the Book of Enoch, which I'm way more versed in since we last met.
Jase RobertsonHOST
21:23
And kind of figured out why that's such a big deal and kind of how that connects.
Jase RobertsonHOST
21:28
And it's, which I didn't really know this before.
Jase RobertsonHOST
22:06
it's in Jude.
Al RobertsonHOST
22:07
Oh, it's from...
Al RobertsonHOST
22:08
Yeah, that's from Enoch.
Al RobertsonHOST

14.
Bevans WelderHOST
26:51
You know, we've been studying in Genesis, those of you who were in adult Sunday school, you've already heard this.
Bevans WelderHOST
26:56

Bevans WelderHOST
26:57
He was in an ungodly generation.
Bevans WelderHOST
27:00
Everybody was walking in an ungodly way, talking in an ungodly way, doing in an ungodly way.
Bevans WelderHOST
27:07
Enoch said, I'm not going to do that.
Bevans WelderHOST
27:08
I'm going to walk with God.
Bevans WelderHOST
27:09
He was a peculiar person, but he walked with God.
Bevans WelderHOST
27:13
And God said, you know what? A lot of bad things are going on around here, Enoch.
JamesHOST
24:07
Noah, who survives the flood, lives 950 years.
JamesHOST
24:11
Enoch is unusual because he is said to have been taken away at 365, rather than dying in the ordinary way, which has generated an enormous tradition of its own around the idea that certain humans were removed or translated by the divine beings.
JamesHOST
24:27
Now, if these ages preserve literal biological memory rather than symbolic numbers, the obvious question is, what was different about those people? The standard human body today does not last 900 years, but lifespan is a biological trait.
JamesHOST
24:42
Genes involved in DNA repair, cell division, metabolism, and the accumulation of damage all influence aging.
JamesHOST

JamesHOST
26:47
The appearance of Gilgamesh in the giant material creates this extraordinary bridge back toward Mesopotamia because Gilgamesh is already remembered as partly divine and physically exceptional in much older traditions.
Steve BerksonHOST
31:38
Before that, Noah had the role.
Steve BerksonHOST
31:41
Okay? Before that, probably Enoch had the role.
Steve BerksonHOST
31:45
Okay? Okay? And we can see, because it said that Enoch walked with Yah, right? So we know that he walked with Yah, then we see that Noah walked righteously before Yah.
Steve BerksonHOST
31:57
Now, we know that Shem gets held in fairly high esteem eventually.
Steve BerksonHOST
32:00
We haven't had much discussion about Shem, really, but it seems to be the consensus that if you do the genealogies and know who was alive at the time and everything else, Shem outlives Abraham.
Brian ScottHOST
1:58
They'll hear it.
Brian ScottHOST
2:00
