Carl GoodmanGUEST
39:39
So we don't see dangling wires off the side of them as you might when you rip your engine out of your car at home.
Carl GoodmanGUEST
39:48
So it's a lot of almost aerospace level connectors on the electrical ECUs, things like that.
Carl GoodmanGUEST
39:57
So you pluck the engine out of the car, put it on its little cart.
Carl GoodmanGUEST
40:01
We'll roll it across to the dyno.
Sean TippingHOST
11:12
That's it.
Sean TippingHOST
11:13
And that is in the stop start ECU.
Sean TippingHOST
11:16
And I'll explain what the stop start ECU does.
Sean TippingHOST
11:19
But if you look into this code, it basically just says the engine didn't start.
Sean TippingHOST
11:23
Now, in the ECM, there are no relevant codes.
Sean TippingHOST
11:28
Like I said, there was a code that basically said, hey, there's a code in the stop start ECU, but nothing relevant as to why the engine did not start.
Sean TippingHOST
11:38
Okay.
Sean TippingHOST
11:40
So at this point, I need to do a little bit of research on the system.
Brian MortonHOST
38:47
As soon as the ignition is on, the brake pedal is not pressed.
Brian MortonHOST
38:52
Seven to six volts are present on the wire from the brake switch to the brake lights, ECU, and ABS module.
Brian MortonHOST
38:59
Through this, the ECU might detect a depressed brake pedal, so the engine cuts gas.
Brian MortonHOST
39:04
Then I checked the GND resistance from the ECU to battery.
Brian MortonHOST
39:08
A lot of letters here.
Brian MortonHOST
39:09
And the ABS module to battery.
Brian MortonHOST
39:14
Then I took the cable out of the plug, checked the voltage of the corresponding pin against the battery minus.
Brian MortonHOST
39:20
Wow.
Bill THOST
20:58
And what controls that typically on a basic EFI?
Danny FoersterGUEST
21:01
I use a micro squirt ECU.
Bill THOST
21:05
Okay.
Danny FoersterGUEST
21:06
So.

15 MINS LATER

Danny FoersterGUEST
36:17
Yeah.
Danny FoersterGUEST
36:18
I load a base map into everyone I ship out.
Danny FoersterGUEST
36:21
And so I load the base map into it and then I take it out to my car and And I unplug my ECU, plug in the one I'm about to send out and start the car and make sure that the base map I wrote took correctly just for a peace of mind, you know? And it fires right up every time and has the high cold start idle and it comes down and I blip the throttle and it revs really smooth and I package it up and label it has a base map for a stock 1600 and it's ready to go it
Bill THOST
37:00
would be interesting to see a side by side of like a stock engine with one of these on there and then you switch it and on the stock engine you have video of how quickly it accelerates because i would assume that would make a big difference in how quickly it accelerates because if it's timing the fuel just right you're not you're not running it too fat and it's not revving slow trying to burn.
Brandon ClarkGUEST
22:09
And that's the key.
Brandon ClarkGUEST
22:10
As long as you're not changing the exhaust components, the ECU is meant to adapt to different displacements.
Brandon ClarkGUEST
22:16
That same ECU is used anywhere from 2.7 to 3.8 liters.
Brandon ClarkGUEST
22:22
And so it's not an issue to move it up to 4.1 liters.
Gavin ClarkGUEST
22:26
And since we're up in the compression ratio and getting a little better mileage, if anything, why don't we get a little better emissions from that? Or is that me kind of talking above my pay grade?

7 MINS LATER

Brandon ClarkGUEST
29:21
So we solved the issue mechanically with our spring package and have seen really good results there.
Brandon ClarkGUEST
29:27
Haven't seen any degradation of reliability.
Brandon ClarkGUEST
29:30
However, the ECUs have been fighting us a little bit and we're still kind of work, you know, on some it's not an issue, on others it is.
Marc SwansonGUEST
18:39
A little faster getting cars set up.
Marc SwansonGUEST
18:41
Um, so yeah, we, uh, we do everything from, um, you know, kind of mundane timing belt services and brake jobs to, you know, full-on wiring harnesses and, um, ECUs and, and things to bring cars to life.
Mike PalumboHOST
18:53
What was...
Mike PalumboHOST
18:54
Uh, you said you started in 2011.

13 MINS LATER

Marc SwansonGUEST
32:10
Yep.
Mike PalumboHOST
32:10
Cool.
Marc SwansonGUEST
32:11
And we, we're I think one of the only shops in the country that does tuning on those stock ECUs anymore.
Marc SwansonGUEST
32:15
So between the 92s to the, um, like 96, 97, um, you know, Motronic M232.
