At the end of the day, true change, healing emotional eating and losing weight permanently only comes when you realize that what you eat does not matter nearly as much as why and how you eat.

Welcome everyone.

So happy to be here with you today for this episode.

And on today's episode, we're going to be talking about the difference between a healing journey and a weight loss journey and how Oftentimes, we focus on results when really we're supposed to focus on our healing and how spending energy and effort preoccupied with food, macros, counting calories, and weight loss results actually hinder and hurt your ability to truly heal from emotional eating.
Alana KesslerHOST
1:05
Because it's so important to remember that when it comes to healing and healing our relationship with food and creating a body image that we love and feel safe in and feel confident moving through the world in, there's a difference between a weight loss journey and a healing journey.
Alana KesslerHOST
1:30
We're going to talk about what those differences are.
Alana KesslerHOST
5:16
I don't ever worry about that anymore.
Alana KesslerHOST
5:18
And I did worry about that in the past when I was...
Ashleigh VanHoutenHOST
2:04
Um, maybe we'd talk about some more of the emotional side of...
Ashleigh VanHoutenHOST
2:09
We're gonna talk about maybe emotional eating.
Ashleigh VanHoutenHOST
2:10
We're gonna talk about body image and how it literally impacts everybody, and how even the people that you see on social media and think, "They're the most sorted out, jacked person I've ever seen," they are probably eating their feelings at night, at least sometimes.
Ashleigh VanHoutenHOST
2:25
Hands up.
Sonal Mehrotra KapoorHOST
41:10
Uh, there is a component of the amount of protein you're eating, how you're sleeping, amount of water in your system, all of that.
Sonal Mehrotra KapoorHOST
41:17
Is there a checklist or a way in which a sustained lifestyle will ensure that my signals are working uninterrupted? They're not getting triggered by cravings, not getting triggered by emotional eating, not getting triggered by, say, you know, hangry feelings.
Sonal Mehrotra KapoorHOST
41:35
Is there, is there a way in which I can look at it more holistically?
Jasjeet WazirGUEST
41:39
So it, that's what lifestyle is.

13 MINS LATER

Jasjeet WazirGUEST
54:59
It's a simple way to know.
Jasjeet WazirGUEST
55:01
There's no rocket science to that.
Sonal Mehrotra KapoorHOST
55:04
Let's talk about, uh, emotional eating.
Sonal Mehrotra KapoorHOST
55:09
A lot of people, I mean, the movies have abused this, ""Breakup ho gaya toh ek tub of ice cream ke saath baithe hue hain." Or, um, if you're going through a rough patch in, you know, in your life, you'll probably see people expand in size or lose too much weight, right? All of that has been shown.
Glenn LivingstonGUEST
29:24
... s- here, here's what I...
Glenn LivingstonGUEST
29:26
Here's the unusual way that I see emotional eating.
Glenn LivingstonGUEST
29:28
I'm still a psychologist, and I still do traditional therapy, and I have the utmost compassion for people and what they went through.
Glenn LivingstonGUEST
29:35
But if you're coming to me for...
Kendall AaliyahHOST
1:14
So sorry.
Julia ReneHOST
1:15
We're gonna be talking about emotional eating.
Julia ReneHOST
1:17
Like, why we do it, how to change it.
Julia ReneHOST
1:20
Um, I do wanna put a little trigger warning at the beginning of this episode, um, for eating disorders.

12 MINS LATER

Kendall AaliyahHOST
13:46
Even if you don't do it instantly or do it perfectly, like it is such an easy loop to stay within, and not just for eating habits, with like so many other things in life, and like bad habits we're trying to break.
Julia ReneHOST
13:56
Exactly.
Julia ReneHOST
13:57
I, and I know that like we are talking about, you know, binge eating or emotional eating, like specifically here, but you're so right.
Julia ReneHOST
14:05
Like, this is truly the way that we become aware of-
Lorena BrownGUEST
29:04
But the idea is that by doing things in this way, it helps to sort of regularize things in terms of, you know, things like keeping blood sugar levels stable.
Lorena BrownGUEST
29:20
which helps to minimize um cravings it helps to protect against um going too long without food and then suddenly feeling starving and then reaching for something that perhaps isn't the best option for your body or is maybe too much for what your body needs um so really trying to sort of reset everything so that people can reconnect with those hunger and satiety cues um also teach people about different types of hunger and you've kind of you kind of touched upon this before um and and this is a slightly over simplistic way of describing it but um I talk to people about uh is what you're experiencing stomach hunger like physical hunger or could it be heart hunger which is more your emotional eating.
Lorena BrownGUEST
30:18
So could it be that you're stressed or lonely or anxious or bored and you're eating because of one of those things? Or is it mouth hunger? So mouth hunger is more your habit eating or those kind of sensory cravings that people sometimes have, like, oh, I could just do with something crunchy or I could just do with something salty.
Lorena BrownGUEST
30:45
Or is it head hunger? So I'm kind of moving up the body.

Yeah, absolutely.
Shauna WattsHOST
50:26
What's the, um, the psychological side of things that the weight loss medication isn't addressing and that you would love to? people to understand that they really do need to address alongside that weight loss journey
Lorena BrownGUEST
50:40
yeah yeah but i think you know it can depend obviously on the individual but um perhaps if uh one of the factors that that led to their their weight being where it was at was emotional eating for example um so a couple of things that i might see when someone or is on GLP ones is that, um, uh, they, if, if they've used food to deal with emotions and, and that might mean either avoiding them or soothing them with emotions, um, and then they're no longer able to do that, then, um, They might feel a bit of a loss, really.
Lorena BrownGUEST
51:22
So sometimes people experience heightened emotions.

Have you ever found yourself standing in the pantry, not because you were hungry, maybe you were overwhelmed, bored, anxious, lonely, exhausted? Today's episode is going to get to the bottom of your emotional eating.
Kelly CalabreseHOST

So I have Amber Romaniak, an emotional eating, digestive and hormone expert with 13 years experience helping high achieving women create a level of body confidence, intuition and optimal health through powerful mindset healing, self-care and overcoming self-sabotage with food.
Harriet FrewHOST
0:55
So she does this through addressing the key negative thoughts, patterns, and limiting beliefs that keep women stuck in the same behaviors for years and decades that they haven't been able to break.
Harriet FrewHOST
1:05
And her podcast, the No Sugar Coating podcast, has two million plus downloads, over 600 episodes, and is listened to in over 90 countries.
Harriet FrewHOST
1:17
Yeah, that's amazing, Amber.
Harriet FrewHOST
1:19
I think that must be one of the most downloaded podcasts in the food freedom space.
Harriet FrewHOST
1:26
So Amber has been on her own journey and overcame her own emotional eating after gaining and losing more than a thousand pounds and spending over $50,000 on binge foods and spending five years balancing our hormones and digestion.
Harriet FrewHOST
1:40
And she also dismantled her deep limiting beliefs and behaviors, keeping her stuck in the same looping patterns.
Camille BeckstrandHOST
9:06
The to-do list never is done.
Camille BeckstrandHOST
9:08
The mental load never never fully goes away and so our cortisol stays elevated and the urge to eat in ways that feel comforting make everything harder and it just keeps coming and then we feel guilty and guilt is a stressor and stress raises cortisol and cortisol raises our appetite and this cycle that we get stuck in just goes on and on so here's what i want you to hear stress eating it's not a weakness It's a physiological response to a real hormone signal in your body.
Camille BeckstrandHOST
9:39
And when you understand that, you really understand it, it's often the first step to actually changing the pattern.
Camille BeckstrandHOST
9:46
Not through more willpower, not through white-knuckling your way through, I'm just going to ignore the craving, but through addressing the thing that's driving the craving in the first place.
Jasmine FernandezGUEST
21:04
But by continuing that and continuing to advocate, or I like to say, fight, put both fists up this disease, it has helped me grow.
Jasmine FernandezGUEST
21:15
And then, so currently, I really like going to the emotional eating support group in Berry Nation and listening to that.
Jasmine FernandezGUEST
21:23
I'm not alone in this has really, really changed everything and how I think about about food around.
