We pull out our umbrellas and walk south.

So it was called Welfare Island because it was an island of misfits.

It was basically where you put anyone who didn't belong.

So they famously have a smallpox hospital here.

They also had one of New York's first lunatic asylums on the island.

They've had several hospitals.

All of these institutions, the hospital, sanatorium, prison, were all clumped at the south end of this island, which is where we're heading towards.
