And so back about in 2014, when I was the EMS subcommittee chair for the American Academy of Pediatrics, one of the leaders in ED readiness, Dr. Marion Gauche-Hill proposed, why don't we do this for EMS as well? Why don't we have this concept of readiness for pre-hospital care? And so that idea sparked the work to have multi-organization collaboration between the AAP, the American College of Emergency Physicians, the National Association of EMS Physicians, National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians, and the Emergency Nurses Association to create a joint policy statement on pediatric readiness in the pre-hospital setting.

And so that was published back in 2020.

And right around the time that that was getting published, we, through Emergency Medical Services for Children program, funded by the Health Resources and Services Administration, I embarked on creating a steering committee to create this assessment because the assessment that's done in the emergency department is specific to that context.
