The childhood of Florence Nightingale, begun, as we have seen, in the sunny land of Italy, was subsequently passed in the beautiful surroundings of her Derbyshire home and at Embley Park, Hampshire, a fine old Elizabethan mansion, which Mr. Nightingale purchased when Florence was about six years old.

The custom was for the family to pass the summer at Lehurst, going in the autumn to Embley for the winter and early spring.

I honestly expected it to be listed for so, so much more than that.

I guess the family spent most of their time at the much larger than 4,000-acre Embley Park estate.

It's now the 130-acre site after, you know, parcels were sold off here and there over the years.

Site of the 700-plus student, 200 or so staff Embley School for kids age 2 through 18.

but she did accomplish a lot without him.

True to her reserved nature, Florence had requested to have a small funeral, even though the entire country wanted to honor her.

England's offer of a burial in Westminster Abbey, one of the nation's highest honors, was declined by her relatives, and she is buried in the churchyard of St. Margaret's Church in East Willow, Hampshire, near Embley Park, with a memorial with just her initials and date of birth and death.

Every May 12th, International Nurses Day in honor of Florence Nightingale.
