We are joined today by Ambassador Jack Matlock, who had a frontline seat to many of the crises between the United States and Russia.

Ambassador Matlock was stationed at the U.S. Embassy in Moscow during the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962.

He was Reagan's senior advisor on Soviet and European affairs.

He was then the U.S. ambassador to the Soviet Union.

Diplomats in the U.S. Embassy in Moscow heard everyday Russians tell the jokes, then sent them to CIA operatives for their amusement.
