The storied paintings representing eras in its history were draped in sable, through which they seemed to cast reverential glances upon the lamented bier.

The thrilling scenes depicted by Trumbull, the commemorative canvases of Leutze, the wilderness vegetation of Powell, glared from their separate pedestals upon the central spot where lay the fallen majesty of the country.

WASHINGTON, APRIL 27.

The Crossing looks at how artists have represented Continental Army Commander in Chief George Washington's crossing of the Delaware River on Christmas night, 1776.

The Crossing is particularly interested in how artists have built on and often, air quotes, "refuted" Emanuel Leutze's famed 1851 painting, Washington Crossing the Delaware, which of course is in the collection of The Met in New York.

The exhibition, which was curated by Laura Igo, is up through January 10th, 2027.

Also, an exhibition of Gibson's most recent work opens at Philadelphia's Fleisher/Ollman Gallery tomorrow, September 18th, and remains on view through November 7th.

... uh, which has been a rich area of scholarly study in the laft h- last half century, um, arguably beginning with Benedict Anderson and continuing through, uh, Philadelphian Rogers M. Smith, who is, I don't know, fair to say the, the dean of United States thinkers on, on our civic narrative.
